Honestly, if a bunch of commenters on the internet can think of all these "problems", obviously a huge corporation with a huge team of lawyers will think of these issues as well. Just because they didn't show extensive cleaning doesn't mean it didn't happen and just because your cat is a terror doesn't mean everyones are. I'm sure there was a screening process as to what cats were allowed and they even showed an animal handler in the video... Even if he was the only one there, they clearly had their bases covered as to what circumstances they could expect.

Although on the flip side, I'm sure if anything went terribly wrong they wouldn't tell us anyway.

They got some beautiful footage out of it though, the finished product is fantastic.

lauren84: totally agreed on the beer! I just got back from a camping trip where we had just enough beer to last us... any less and it would have been a disaster!

I always forget flashlights and this year... forgot toothpaste as well. Luckily we were only camping a few minutes from town so we could go home and get our forgotten stuff!

I'm a casual smoker and still can't stand the smell of a home that's been occupied by heavy smokers. My bf is also a casual smoker and we live in a building that is "recommended non-smoking" since our landlords can't actually tell us not to smoke inside. We always go outside for cigarettes anyway because we both grew up in smoking households and neither of us want the smell around.

Anyway, smokers in apartments nearby wouldn't be a deal breaker for me if it was my dream apartment, because who am I to judge what other people do in their own place? They're paying their own money and the landlord clearly doesn't really care if they smoke inside their apartment. If you're that sensitive to it, then it seems this isn't your perfect apartment but you might not necessarily find anything better. Besides, when you live in an apartment building, you have to get used to what other people around you do that you don't necessarily enjoy.

Our neighbour smokes weed all day (which gets into the hallway) and plays really loud live music late at night but we just deal with it.

When we did a walk-through of our current apartment, the former tenants were just in the midst of moving out... I went in the bathroom and someone had thought to put a wineglass on the bathroom counter to hold various items. It actually looked really great and I kind of want to do this now!

When I first moved out, I found a great deal on a box of 12 wine glasses (originally $9.99 which is already a fab price but was on 40% discount and then got an extra 10% with my employee discount) and then realized I had nowhere to store them in my new place. I ended up having to buy one of those microwave cart things and mine came with shelves and a cupboard underneath, so I stuck all the glasses on the bottom shelf. Also, all my weird sized mugs get put on the shelves so it worked out pretty well. I could probably get rid of half of them... but what about when I have 11 people over? Hah.

Oh gosh, Melle, your number four point happened to us in our new-ish apartment! It's a renovated old house and the landlords were definitely eager to fix the problem but it was so gross to see old bits of food in the bathtub when you least expected it.

Our apartment has a lot of little DIY quirks but I'm not really bothered by them. The floors are uneven (I dropped a bottle of pop the first time we went grocery shopping... it just rolled toward the cabinets, haha) and the bathroom is a weird uneven disaster. BUT it's a place to call home and we love it, despite it's topsy-turnyness.

Honestly, at my parents house where I grew up, our neighbours are fabulous. They live on a court and everyone is very happy with each other (usually) but at my new place... we're more anonymous. It's just a four apartment/old house convert but one of the other tenants was already a friend and we totally take out her recycling because it just sits outside her door all the time and she forgets that it's garbage day, haha.

Other than her, I think our neighbour beside us is a drug dealer (lots of visitors all through the day that only stay for a few minutes, hmm) which we're not really concerned with because we all keep weird hours, but our downstairs neighbour is a whole other story. He latched onto my boyfriend the day we moved in when the neighbour saw we had boxes labelled "XBOX, VIDEO GAMES, ETC" and it went downhill from there. Now the neighbour randomly shows up at our door just to see what's going on (one time I had a visit because he wanted to know if I was working out) and then puts down our space as if we can control how big the kitchen is or whatever. I go out of my way to avoid him, but the bf is too nice. Oh well.

Although, I do have a friend that just recently bought her very first house and her new neighbour had also just moved in when she found out he pulled a gun in his old neighbourhood. Her first party was a couple of months after she moved in (for Canada Day) and he basically came over at 10pm and told us we were being way too loud (we weren't) and that he didn't move here to "live beside the party princess at the party palace". I don't think they've spoken since.

My mom bought me one of those three-packs of flashlights when I moved out and they're still kicking around somewhere... Unfortunately since I moved again they've gotten lost in the shuffle, along with the plain white candles she also gave me. Sorry mom! I'll have to look for those as our power goes out every so often thanks to the wind off the lake.

BUT, once I DO find those candles I've got matches in the bathroom and hundreds of lighters from when I used to smoke and could never find one.

Why do you think a mirror would be any harder to clean than a plain wall? Or tiled backsplash? I actually think it might make it easier.

Anywho, I already saw this controversy on Decorno... the owners commented saying they clean up after themselves and they do cook in the kitchen. I don't recall what he said about the counterspace though, because I definitely would need more than that.

I grew up in a city with a father who triple-checked locks every night so I always lock the doors. Even now that I live in a small, safe town I like to keep the doors locked. I now live with the boyfriend who grew up in a small town nearby and on army bases so his family never locked doors. He's pretty good about it now, but I generally find the door unlocked in the morning about once a week.

Most of my friends here also leave their doors unlocked when they're inside and when they've gone out. I think we would be a lot more lax on the locking policy if we lived in a house but for some reason apartments make me want to lock the doors always.

But we also have a few friends who live out on farms and they literally never lock their doors. Mostly because they have quarter-mile laneways and snowy weather six months out of the year so thieves would have to be pretty gung-ho to rob them.

OH GOD this post just inspired me to go and vacuum the rug that I've been ignoring for three weeks and sweep the bathroom that I've been ignoring since we moved in... at the beginning of November.

We moved into a new place with carpet ONLY in the bedroom (the rest is laminate faux-wood and real hardwood) and I just vacuumed it for the first time tonight. I sweep the kitchen regularly, but anywhere else just gets overlooked... especially the bathroom. I have really long hair and it's such pain to sweep up so I just... don't do it.

We also have reciepts, bills and random paper EVERYWHERE. I leave half-read books everywhere in case I randomly get the urge to read. Clothes in the bedroom are scattered all over and the second bedroom/office is something I can't even think about. The last two boxes that we'll never unpack are in there so I have no hope that anything useful will happen there.

Our biggest problem is storage... in that we have none of it. Some sort of plan needs to be made to store all the random bric-a-brac that's lying around.

The first apartment I lived alone in had a streetlight right outside a window that was across from my bed. There was no door to the "bedroom" (it was more of an open space hidden around the corner from the kitchen) just an archway, AND the place came with sheer curtains and my landlords asked me to keep them up because they wanted the building to look uniform from the outside. I was used to blackout curtains and blinds so it was a bit of an adjustment.

I tried the sleeping mask but it irritated my face and I never got used to it. Finally my mom found long dark purple fabric to make curtains out of and her and my dad hung them inside the archway. I just clipped them closed each night and voila! I suddenly didn't care about the streetlight anymore! I still wish I had known about it though, I went a few months without any solutions.

Huh, I didn't realize this could happen! But while taking a walk-through of our newish apartment I got a phonecall and walked through the rooms while talking on it so I guess that's one way to know if it works or not. I'm also in Southwestern Ontario and have coverage through Bell Canada so I was always under the impression that we have good coverage throughout the region here.

I like that idea from Nordstroms... I used to work at a department store and it was ridiculous setting up for Christmas at the beginning of November.

If I were in America I would definitely wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate, but since I'm Canadian I decorate after Remembrance Day is over. I just put up my little tree this past week because I couldn't wait any longer and it had been a week since Remembrance Day.

My mom waits until December begins and we used to have a "Lighting of the Lights" party on the first Saturday in December to turn the outdoor Christmas lights on with all our friends :)

Including a picture of your house is a great idea! I never thought of that, but at least then your guests will know what to look for.

I live in a small town so pretty much everyone knows what house I mean when I tell them where we live. When my out of town friends visit, I like to give them insanely detailed directions and possibly even a hand-drawn map because I like to draw, haha. They're never to scale though, so I have to warn them ahead of time.

As someone who routinely has to go searching for places in the dark... visible house numbers are key! Also, if I had any control over street signs, I would make all municipalities buy stock in bright orange ones or something. The county to the north of us has dark blue signs and trying to find a sideroad or concession is ridiculous when it gets dark out.

I'm one of those people who works on holidays -- all of them -- because that's part of my job and while I complain... it's nice to be able to spend time alone or with friends who are also in the same boat. My family doesn't live that far away, so as I usually work the morning shift (ends at noon) I can always make it home for Thanksgiving or Easter if I want to. I love my family dearly but I can't commit to spending every holiday with them for the rest of our lives. My grandparents are gone now, and we don't have a lot of extended family so it's always got a bid of sadness around the holidays anyway. The house used to be full and bustling, but not anymore :/

My boyfriend is a chef who also works on every holiday (except Christmas Day, but I have to work that day anyway) but never complains because that means time and a half and a little extra money to spend during the holiday season. As for whether restaurants should be closed... I think people who choose to work at restaurants know what they're getting into when they begin their jobs... Working in the service industry means you may not get the holidays off and that's just something they have to deal with.

LittleEdie: Actually H1N1 and the seasonal flu are different strains, so H1N1 is not this year's season flu. That's why most health units are offering the H1N1 vaccine as well as the seasonal flu vaccine a little further down the road.

Although, must agree with the sleeve-sneezing! I've started it this year and have noticed that most other people are too so that's encouraging.

I was always kind of partial to the Stoneleigh... it's a classic! Very crisp and nice detail. BUT, I longed for Crestwood Cobalt Platinum! I used to work in the china department at a big store, so I wasn't buying but we used to put together place settings all the time, lol.

One thing that is important to remember, if you're serious about matching you might want to look into the shapes of the teapot and serving platters and such. Just in case! Some of the extras are hideous, I find.

I lovelovelove Reidel wineglasses, but they're way too pricy. I used to work in a china department at a department store and picked out my favourites everyday, haha. One of our house brands also created boxes of 12 wineglasses (and beer glasses) for $9.99 so I ended up going with those when I moved out on my own. Of course, I got a box that was on clearance for five dollars or thereabouts and then with my employee discount was even less!

They're a good size, clarity and I've only broken one in the almost three years I've had them.

I used to smoke and very, very occasionally have one now and then, but no one I know smokes inside. We have a pretty widespread smoking ban (inside bars, inside cars with children, outside hospitals) along with all the usual places so we're all pretty used to suffering through the cold winters outside with a cigarette, haha.

I live in an apartment, so everyone goes outside to smoke if they're here. As I don't have a balcony, I don't provide anything because it would have to sit outside near the sidewalk and would probably get stolen.

I think if you're having guests over for a party of some sort though, you should always provide something. For the commenter that doesn't let people smoke on their property, is it any better when they put the cigarette out on the road in front of your house? Or your neighbours driveway? You don't have to like smoking and be as judgey and mean as you want, but an ashtray cuts down on discarded cigarette butts in the general public.
