The problem isn't that it is delicate, it is that it is impossible to remove since it coils and links to itself like a steel tangle of twine.

You will be hearing from my lawyers, but I do not appreciate being included amongst the Satanists shown above.

I'd feel different if I had won the Small Cool competition as I should have, but my loss has driven me to other side. I do not have photos yet, but my house is now snow-white from top to toe apart from the crocheted icons and Miss Kitty stencils that reflect my new world view.

You are all evil.

Black speakers would be a better idea. Those glossy white ones wi9ll reflect back onto the scree.

The photo is deceptive since it doesn't show the true size of the room, and importantly the height of the ceilings.

In any case I don't think it works at all. A large fixture in a small space is great when it becomes the sole focus of attention. In the photo above the pendant fights the art behind it, and the same is true of all the DC links.

In a small space, one thing should dominate. It can be the light, but if so pare back everything else and choose a great piece.

Here's a good example:

No good rug is dog friendly, and most cannot be cleaned properly even when they say they can.

If it will have traffic and puppies, I'd get the most aesthetically pleasant one you can find off eBay and treat it as a disposable item.

This will still probably be of better quality than the Pottery Barn one, and much cheaper. I have two stunning looking rugs that I got on eBay for a tenth of their (supposed) retail price.

They look great, and are cheap enough that if the looks fade I'll simply buy another one.

The red one cost me $75 and the wooly grey one was $150. The red one's predecessor was $25.

I also wouldn't hang floor to ceiling curtains. They will simply look dd when opened.

I'd go for blinds or window length curtains, with a really dramatic piece of art or wall sculpture above the window.

I'd also repaint the whole thing much darker, but that's just me.

I think Hinke has the best suggestions. Let light and the way the sun moves guides you. Sleeping areas away from the morning sun, work areas close to the day sun, and so forth.

I have casters on everything in a similar but smaller space and it works brilliantly.

The NYT is entirely within its rights, and AT is without a leg to stand on.

If you want to do pieces on NYT articles, do it without showing half the photos and reprinting half the story.

Pretending that the aim of these posts is to drive traffic back to the original rights holder is disingenuous at best.

Mikebdesign,

Thanks for noticing the artwork on the floors. I was a little worried that people would confuse the specially designed installations (constructed at great expense I must admit), with mere dust or (perish the thought) lint.

It was hard to capture on film, but when you get high enough the individual grains you can see in the photos actually form a floor mural that is a piquant comment on life's infinite jest.

Thanks again for all the lovely compliments. If I hadn't donated my capillaries to science a few years back I would surely blush.

Marla,

Don't give up hope. The knowledge you are unattainable makes me want you anew.

nbabylon,

The ladder is commercially available (at least it is here in Australia and Europe). It is called a Mezzalad:

A hack of a regular ladder wouldn't be too hard, although I'd suggest trying a timber ladder as it would be easier to work with.

Also, you can use it for firewood if you stuff up.

Ms Jessie,

Email away.

Kelley,

Trust me, I can document my failure as a novelist:

The new one comes out in a couple of weeks and I have equally low hopes.

Marla,

Thank you for the kind words. Alas, distance and some of my more extreme character flaws mean it is probably for the best that this budding romance remains unconsumated.

Trailingedge,

Yes, during a temporary attack of geekiness I did make them myself. They are based on these: http://www.linkwitzlab.com/
