I agree with the Laser movement. Although the printer manufacturers have started making the toner cartridges smaller, they are still much bigger (in numbers of printable pages) than the ink cartridges. Also, toners don't "freeze" up if they are not used for extended periods.

Warning. This list is for USA only. In most other parts of the world (now few Americans are scratching their heads, wondering what I mean :D ) the voltage is double than what they use in USA. This means that for the same power the current is halved so you can use much smaller "gauge" wire for similar products, like toaster and hair dryers. Also "gauge" has little meaning outside USA, most of the rest of the world use better ways of measuring wire thickness.
If the lights dim when you turn something on it is not the fault of the extension cord you're using (unless the lights are also on the same extension cord). You might have faulty wiring in your house and you should have it checked by a professional.

There is a saying that "If you have dark colors in a room, you have to have plenty of light". I think that the most under-appreciated feature of interior decorations/design is light. But it only works as long as they're lit. :)

Beware that your result will vary. Some cords will not hold the coiled shape, no matter how much you heat them. Also note that coiled cords are more sensitive to white "noise".

I used to do this to my DVD collection before I ripped them all and packed them away. It really messed up few of my friends who asked me to please remove the eyesore. Some visitors liked it though. :)

I don't recommend anyone discharging the battery unnecessarily, it is simply not needed anymore. Batteries wear with use. You can imagine it as a piece of cheese and each charge cycle takes away a slice.
The newest Android, on my Asus Transformer, has nifty little information window, under settings, telling me exactly what feature is using the electricity; monitor or WiFi, it even tells me what program uses most power. It also has the option of turning off the Wifi when the screen is dark.

No matter where you live, there is always the chance that your house will be broken into. And there is nothing you can really do to stop that. Some things can lower the odds, but nothing will make you perfectly safe for "savvy burglars", all items mentioned in the article can help a little bit (Neighborhood watches really help to cut down on crime in the neighborhood, but it is very difficult to get volunteers for them, especially for the long run).
Since people seem to misunderstand me a lot, I want to repeat my opinions.
A. When no one is home, your most valuable things are not in your home.
B. Cheap or old stuff in your home is less likely to be stolen AND makes your home less likely to be broken into.
(CCINCA. For the last two years, Amsterdam. Owning nice and expensive stuff does not make you a jerk. Yes. No, but if you remove the "not" from the question the answer becomes yes.)

Going On Vacation? How to Make Everyone Think You're Still Home
2/25/12 4:08 PM

Because I travel a lot for my work I don't keep pets. I would never leave an animal alone at home, not even for a day. In my family that is an unthinkable behavior and would be considered cruelty to animals (as a bonus I will never have to worry about my pet escaping during break in). When I was a kid, our pets traveled with us. If I had suggested leaving Nero (our dog) at home, I would have been left there too, to keep him company. Our home was always open to strangers. Anyone in trouble had shelter at our house. It happened that they took things when they left but my parents said that they needed them more than we did.
An uncle of mine refuses to this day to lock his house. His reasoning is that expensive locks encourage break ins and if the door is unlocked, thieves will not break doors or windows down. His is the policy I follow, of having almost nothing worth any real money in the house.

I find it alarming how people are ready to spend lots of money on theft protections, and how frightened people are in their lives.
I hardly keep anything in my house that is worth stealing, I try to wear things out before I replace them. My TV cost less than 400€ 1 year ago. Although the picture quality is fine, savvy burglar would hardly bother with it. My laptop is over 4 years old, I'd be glad for an excuse to replace it. If it was stolen the biggest loss would be the information on it, but the important stuff is backed up. My Ipod Nano is 4th generation, bought on sale when 5th generation came out. I don't even insure my stuff, saving me enough money to buy replacement items should the need arise.
Think about it this way. If the whole family goes together on a vacation, then what you value most is with you on the vacation. The rest is just easily replaceable stuff.

Saying "my phone doesn't have this feature, therefore I don't want it", or similar, is a way of thinking I'm always as surprised to hear outside of the kiddies playground. I get furious when I get the error message that this or that content does not display on my laptop. Oh how I wish everyone would just use the same standard.

It's not even your birthday and you don't want people to take pictures. My father passed away shortly before his 60th birthday, all I can say is that I would like to have more pictures of him.

I had the same problem last summer. I solved it by knocking on my new neighbors door and ask if I could borrow access to his wireless internet connection for a week. No problem.

This article is mostly wrong. Most chargers will stop fast charging when the battery has reached about 80-90% charge. Then they will switch to slow/maintenance charge until the battery is truly full. Leaving the phone plugged in overnight will give you fresher and fuller charge in the morning.
Also note that most phones, and other items, have the charger circuitry built in the unit, not inside the transformer (wallwart). Which is one of the reasons you can charge most things from USB ports these days.

As a former fisherman in Northern Europe I strongly protest the way you word nr 5. For you Americans, if you substitute North America for North Europe and then think about how large and diverse the area is, you can understand the absurdity of the claim.
You say that Farmed Salmon is lower in everything except poison (well that is basically what you wrote :)) I could argue that the quality of the Salmon would depend on the exact location where it is farmed, which brings me to my protest. You then start to talk about N.E. fish on American Menus, like all fish from that area is polluted. The way you put it one could even understand that all fish on American Menus is polluted.
The North Atlantic Ocean, half of which belongs to Northern Europe, is one of the cleanest and healthiest oceans left in the world. Fresh Cod from that area is the best fish you can get.

I remember buying DVD player to watch Matrix in "full" quality. To bad the didn't make sequels of that movie. :)

I recently had to replace my DVD player and since the price difference is small these days I took the jump to BluRay. Since then I've bought few movies on BluRay. At the moment I have about 10 BluRays, 400 DVDs, 200 Audio Cd's and 1000 books. BluRay is the highest quality video standard widely available today. Although I'm not much for paying lot extra for little more, more quality is always better and the price difference is much smaller than it was. I don't like downloaded or streamed content. The quality (glitchy streaming and highly pixelated pictures) is usually lower than I can accept.
Owning hard copies of movies and books may be as antiquated as buying software in a box but I don't buy software anymore. I use Linux and other free software on most of my computers. I've digitised most of my DVDs and Audio Cd's. I have a copy of quite a few of my paper books on my Kindle (plus lots more and most books and disks I keep in the garage so they don't "mess up" my living room).

I once asked the flight attendant if it was ok that I didn't turn my digital watch off. She didn't get the humour. :)
They are pretty nice and usually don't mind me having the noise cancelling headphones turned on even while taking off and landing.
In my opinion; turning Kindles off instead of just turning their antenna off, insisting that phones are off and not in flight mode and not allowing people to use mp3 players is irrational fear and does not show our civilication in good light, blanket policy or not.
