I'm really late to the party here, but i feel everyone's pain. I accidentally over filled the water in the heater. (I live in a building my dad owns so I have to make sure things like this are cared for) It's oil powered steam heat converted from an old coal furnace. The one radiator in my living room doesn't even work and we have no way to figure out why. Anyway I over-filled the water in the steam heater and now it's like somebody is BANGING against the radiators with tire irons. Add to that the creepy steam powered tea kettle whistle and subtract sleep and you have my life for the past few days.

Could the reason the banana helps have anything to do with the fact that bananas (and avocados) contain a latex like compound?

I purchased my pastry blender for one reason, and now I use it for two. A) GUACAMOLE! I have yet to find a way to get the guac to that perfect consistency without using one. B) Egg Salad, chops up all the eggs with out all the work and mess of other methods.

My guac is a huge hit at parties so I make it pretty frequently, therefore a pastry blender is one item that I CANNOT live without. I even took it with me when I lived in the dorms.

they've used these for years in industrial and retail work settings. I worked at lowe's and really never noticed standing for 8-10 hours even in crappy old shoes. (I certainly was not going to wear my best for my job where ANYTHING could get spilled on them at any moment) I'd probably buy one in a heartbeat!

And in my mind they really aren't that ugly, if you are worried about it, you could get an oversized rug to cover it up!

I never thought of this! I really like the idea of the fruit in water. (are those cucumbers? awesome!) I do usually light candles, I tend to like "fall" scents, warm and spicy.

Usually the biggest welcome they get is that the place is actually clean for a change!!!

I always look. I don't just look, I secretly judge people based on the contents of their cart. I then attempt to make witty, mean or humorous comments to the checkout person based on what the person before me purchased.

I hope other people look at my cart, I feel that they may be perplexed by the strange combination of things I purchase.

I recently spent several hours emptying, cleaning and re-organizing my mom's spice cabinet(s). I threw away so much stuff and now everything is easy to find. It's like having a whole new kitchen.

with my family recipe we don't use a water bath, sometimes it cracks, sometimes it doesnt. We don't care either way as long as it is tasty.

For me, most of the time, I live by my mom's (apparent) rule of thumb...If I haven't asked you to be in the kitchen, get out. Luckily, both in her place and mine the dining room is semi attached. Enough so that guests can feel more than welcome to sit at the table to chat. I don't mind this too much and can pretty well pay more attention to the food.

As for how to clear the kitchen? I've always found a general "everybody out!" work's pretty well, maybe not the most civilized but when you've got 11 italian aunts and uncles some of that civilized pretention goes out the window!

Mom has even been known to set up "Do not cross" ropes to the kitchen on major holidays. Now that we're older there are a lot of little things she actually wants help with, and her old school way of mixing...most things....by HAND requires us to be close if there is a spice needed that she forgot.

As for me, I love having an extra hand in the kitchen, then I don't have to go hunting for a spice or anything of that sort. But I have a galley kitchen and suspect the majority of my friends to be smart enough to stay out. i hope.

I live with my parents so the only tech free room is the bathroom. But I'm preparing to move to a new apartment and I was considering this question. My dining room and bathroom will probably be tech free, but I love watching tv in bed, so that stays.
