I subscribe to both AD and Elle Decor. I think AD's articles are too short and they often mention design elements but never show them. Makes me crazy. AD's focus on ultra-high-end spaces also leaves me unsatisfied...anything is possible with all that money...but I'm not aspiring to reproduce any looks.

I've used bathfitter (www.bathfitter.com - warning - SOUND!) in my current and previous homes and have been very satisfied.

I agree on de-cluttering.
I have a couple of nice antique trays attached to my fridge with magnets. You could add one to the dishwasher too.

In the 1950's, my grandmother and aunt had false mantels which they papered inside with something like this - http://www.secondhandrose.com/paperc/9.htm - but with more colors like this http://www.secondhandrose.com/paperc/1.htm .
I thought it was a design standard then but as I grew up I realize I have never seen that anywhere else.

I owned two victorian era houses in MA when I was too broke to pay for help. I got down on my hands and knees and scrubbed the floors with steel wool and strong soap powder (and water) I bought at the hardware store (the brand name of the soap escapes me). I wiped the floors dry with a towel as I proceeded. When the floor was dry I put a few coats of water based polyurethane on them.
This is cheap, looks good and is reversable. Good luck.

My New England bathroom is almost identical to the photo except I have white walls (!). But I have a large wall space and put up a 3 x 4 foot map framed with a border that matches the color in the glass lampshades. Then another smaller map on the adjacent wall. My point is that large well framed graphics can transform the space. I also have no fluff or foo fraw in my bathroom.

I made the mistake of buying an LCD set for the bedroom that was cheaper than well known brand names. (Amazon sells it among others). One part failed after a couple of months and I had to wait for the part to be shipped by the mfr - at least I was under warranty. 2 years later something else went wrong. I was out of warranty and the mfr wanted me to ship it back and charge me $250 for repair. I found out that the parts are not available except from the mfr.
It's gone and I bought a Sharp AQUOS. I have one in the kitchen and it's never given me a problem.
Lesson: if you buy a cheaper brand make sure parts are available to a repair person.

I have a 27" Olevia and the Infrared reader failed twice. The first time it was under warranty and they had to fix it; the second time they wanted to charge me $250 to have someone come to my house to fix it. With no guarantee that it won't fail again, my best option is to replace it with a grown up LCD.

My method is similar. I use (only) heavily salted water and put the chicken in before turning the stove on. I cook at the lowest possible setting (I have an electric stove and that setting is quite low) for an hour or so. Then I turn off the heat and let the pot sit for a while.

I've never met a guy who, upon seeing my great grandmother's cast iron frying pan, did not tell me how to clean it.

Here's my method (not for the sensitive).

Cook
Let cool
place on floor
dog will get it amazing clean
Now the not for wussies part:
Wash it using a small amount of soap to get dog germs off
Place back on stove on medium and dry.
Let cool
Repeat

and no I'm not a packrat - the Mojo mags are the only magazines I collect. All the others go to the hospital reading cart my sister runs.

I see the Mojo mags there. I am missing a few issues from year one. If you have any from year one I'd love to buy them. Post a response and let me know.
