too many "props."

I think it looks a bit like superficial accumulation...

I follow the modernist dictum : form follows function. that doesn't mean everything should look like a white cube, but this rampant accumulation and crowding on the part of 2 twenty/young 30 somethings (I'm guessing...) seems a bit mindless.

the meaning that things have to someone is what makes them meaningful... and i risk sounding rigid when i say that objects accumulate their meaning with time and love... it's not just about grabbing everything dusty and old in your nearest junk shop and stacking it everywhere...

like that bar in park slope on union street with the walls lined with bookshelves lined with fake books...

REAL books take longer to procure...

i don't have the feeling that the owners of all this have given any real thought to what the meaning the stuff has to them, which makes it all seem sort of cold and pretentious, but very seductive to people seeking to project things about themselves...

Old English hunting boots that aren't worn artfully leaning against the chesterfield - gimme a break. it's really very cynical - "you know that we don't use these and we know that we don't ha ha ha"

they were already mentioned in a NY-times article about hipster style...

i feel like it's a model for how i don't want my house to look.

about ugly luggage ---

the salespeople a little "too cool for school," which is boring and makes me wonder how truly well they know the objects they sell, since they are so reluctant to talk about them.

the prices probably a bit high - but hey - it's not a junk shop... the guy who owns it already weeded out the bad stuff.

lastly, to all the people who did not comment on the store itself but who attacked each other, let's lose the hate.

(like you were never 23 years old and thought you were cooler than god... let kids be kids...)

this is one of the most beautiful homes i've ever seen on AT.

i was getting a bit sick of AT - everything is mid-century modern, like mid-century modern is the new pottery barn or something.

but it's not fair to say that because mid-century - Bertoia chairs for instance - are actually very beautiful and elegant...

Martha and Ben used mid-century modern furniture as it should be used, as functional and beautiful pieces which they updated and historicized and personalized in their gorgeous brownstone. The animal skulls, skins, old trunks, books, quilts and art warm up the furniture so that it all melds into their home in happy harmony rather than just being a game of "spot the 500 dollar chair."

bravo

i know this will sounds very mean-spirited but i think it's oppressively girly... in a kind of "shabby chic" way. it doesn't look really antique and it looks all sort of overly upholstered.

i can't see the exterior of the Parisian building, but assuming it's one of the classic Haussmanian buildings we associate with Paris, the 19th c. architectural details will be sufficiently beautiful offset by some austerity. All the doo-dads and tchotchkes cover it all up.

This could be Indianapolis or Des Moines or NYC or Shanghai. It looks like faux-Baroque a la shabby chic.

by the way, i just bought The Complete Robuchon - a French cookbook. And he advises against the colored Le Creuset enameled Dutch ovens and cookwear.

They can chip and it will get in your food and poison you.

So much for the mock French country style kitchens of Brooklyn generously stocked with Le Creuset.

1. hipster tchotchkes/knick-knacks -
ie globes, dead animals, unused appliances (ancient vacuum cleaners, radios etc), family photos of people you don't know, taxidermy, books you don't read but which have hipster-cool 50s style image on the cover, colorful kitchen aid mixer that you don't use.

2. color-coding books: no one who really likes to read does this.

3. too much ikea.

4. too much dwr.

5. too much thrift shop stuff so that the place looks like a thrift shop

6. anthropologie/pottery barn: corporate versions of the hipster knick knacks - see above - found in thrift stores.

7. Chinoiserie and/or (oddly) pictures of Mao.

In other words, function over form. remember who you are when you decorate your apartment and let it take its form naturally, gracefully, meaningfully so that people can see who YOU are.

i prefer the "before" - it's sort of understated and elegant (minus the strewn clothing everywhere, but that's life intervening). the "after" looks a bit contrived, as though Cute Adolescence Pictured by a Mother were recreated for a sitcom set.

i love it. it's very tasteful, but not boring, stylish but not sterile. there's a kind of spontaneity and warmth and it makes me curious about the person who lives there.

seems to be filled with usable and/or beautiful things.

Not sure i get the Chairman Mao statue. Is it supposed to be ironic? Would the owners have a Chairman Mao statue if they were Chinese?

Given the fact that he killed 20 million people, it doesn't seem very hip to me.

I have remarked that putting images of Mao around seems to be a Decorating Trend among yuppie Western Europeans and Americans (not among, I would assume people with Asian origin, or Chinese nationals, for example).

I wonder when pictures of Hitler will be hip?

The kitchen is gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous.

how mean of everyone! i mean i have seen some places that are REALLY "ikea" and i don't like that, and i've seen some that are REALLY "dwr" and they are no better, believe me.

So I actually saw the comments before I looked at the pictures and then I expected something "Really Ikea." IT'S SO NOT!!

Very pretty - nice use of space, shape, color.

I haven't been to ikea in about 5 yrs, so maybe they are making some very great stuff these days if your apartment is "so ikea." your place makes me want to go!

Park Slope, Brooklyn NY represent! tree lined streets of brownstone townhouses, children outside playing, hardly any chain stores, people tending little gardens on the sidewalk (inside those wrought iron things they put around trees), Prospect Park - summer when the lawns are covered by people bbqing or sunbathing or children playing baseball...in winter, i can't imagine it looks different today than it did in 1900 - children sledding.... A real neighborhood. The Park Slope Food Coop since 1973, fresh organic produce from farms in and around NY state.

For those people who wish they lived in Europe it's perfect.

However, Instantzen, I have to say... I LOVE BERLIN. you are very, very lucky.
