I don't even consider the two comparable. This is like choosing between eating a banana and eating a piece of banana candy. Both may be good and while they are nominally related, they're nothing alike! I love boxed store-bought mac-n-cheese, probably only because it holds a lot of nostalgia. To my mind, it's not even related to real homemade mac-n-cheese, which is as sublime and grown-up and decadent and amazing as anything I can imagine. But to compare the two? The tastes, textures, and experience are 100% different, IMHO.

A bit of a non sequitur - but, let me say, I love this house! I just moved to L.A. from Atlanta, and my mother-in-law (who lives here) has me spooked big-time about earthquakes. I feel like every time she comes over she's looking at all the things that will fall and break when the Big One - or heck, even a relatively minor one - comes. I've never experienced an earthquake but I understand that the smaller ones are pretty common. This place is loaded with tons of beautiful and adorable goodies - such well-curated collections. But all I can think when I see the green pottery on the mantle or the cookie jars in the kitchen is "EARTHQUAKE!" How do folks here deal with this? Or do you just live with it and only put out things that you could live with losing in the event of a 'quake?

I saw "party's" and "your" (instead of "you're") right off the bat - first line in my Google reader. Shudder.

I'll have to have one of these drinks to recover! ;)

How can you show a pink interior and not show Rhoda's apartment? ;) A few good screen captures here:

@KittyAtlanta, glad you've found a way to keep your floors clean! This is exactly what's missing in this list, to me. I just moved to a new place in L.A. that's been completely re-done, including new dark hardwood floors. If I don't sweep and dust-mop everything at least once daily, it looks like I haven't cleaned in a week or more. Mopping should be done at least once a week, if not more often... between that and cleaning after cooking, if I did this list my daily cleaning time would be at least double what this article says. And it probably is! Also, as others have noted, it really depends on how big your place is, how many people and/or animals live there, and I'd add to that your climate - how much dirt makes its way in naturally!

Suzi, my mom has an antique table that is designed very similarly to the Crate and Barrel one you are looking at. Of course it's antique, dark wood, much more curved and ornate aesthetically - more your style. But it does not have handles and could not easily be put under the bed. She uses it, when folded, as a side table under a window and it fits perfectly - but it's there when she needs it. Keep looking (or designing) - you'll find something!

I ate granola bars pretty much every day, but they were the soft/chewy kind, usually, and not the crunchy kind - because of crumbs, not really noise. In grad school we ate in every class, sometimes whole meals - it was understood and ok as we were all busy with other work during our "breaks" (in quotes because they didn't seem like much of a break). People often ate fruit, dried fruit, nuts, yogurt, pretzels, and chips. Noisy wasn't generally a problem (although really noisy candy wrappers or chips could be) - just make sure you don't bring something stinky. No one did, usually. All in all, social workers are a polite bunch. :)

Hoorah, mirandabee! I couldn't agree more. Can't imagine living with all new stuff - chemically treated, made under god-knows-what conditions, and without any history. I treasure my houseful of used, thrifted, and inherited stuff - and am always happy to pass it along to another grateful person for yet another incarnation.

Mhirsch, as of 2 months ago, there was a fabulous coffee shop in Raleigh called Turkish Delight, owned by two sisters from Turkey. They serve coffee and homemade pastries in addition to smoothies and ice cream to cater to the students in the neighborhood, and the shop is adorned in all manner of Turkish goods - all of which, of course, are for sale. Here's the website: http://www.turkishdelightsusa.com/ - I moved back to Atlanta but I assume that they are still open. And if you're looking for Rosewater you can head to Neomonde deli/bakery/cafe in Raleigh, too!

Ugh. Never ever liked this stuff, even as a kid. Skipped many a lunch at bday parties and camps where American cheese was on the menu.

Just made this and it is delicious! I hadn't planned on it, but picked up my CSA box and had a bunch of beets to do something with. I used quinoa instead of the barley because that's what I had on hand, and I added some finely chopped dill - delicious! Thank you!

I have a pair of these and I LOVE them! However, the way I got them was quite strange. I bought a pair and later decided that my budget didn't allow...I had my receipt and was able to return them for a full refund. Then the clerk happened to accidentally scan them and told me that they were ringing in for $.99 each! They were "discontinued" at that time. I had paid, I think, $40 for the original two sheers - here I was able to instantly re-purchase them for $1.98. Later - maybe six months ago? - I was in Ikea and again they had the sheers and again for full price. So, perhaps they aren't _really_ discontinued?

I agree with the comments above - I do not expect to see photos - much less stories - like this one on AT. It seems to me that the AT philosophy is about streamlining your possessions and your mental clutter, keeping only those things that are healthy and add something to your life. I make decisions every day about what kind if media _not_ to look at so that I minimize exposure to the bombardment of misogynist and sizeist stories such as the ones above...not something I expect from AT, and something that would definitely keep me from coming back if repeated often.

Looks fabulous! I'll admit, I have always hated the color-coordinated book trend...I don't know if I'm a purist, a snob, or a slob. ;)

When I was in Europe, many homes (including my aunt's in Florence) had what we Americans call "dorm fridges." I loved being in Europe because I had so much more access to food on every street corner. I can only remember being in a big supermarket one time. The rest of the time I was in small markets and even convenience stores (which, as a rule, had exponentially better prepared foods than even most major grocery chains here). Anyhow, you don't need to buy so much at once because you can easily buy it every day (at least in many more urban areas).

I agree with the faucet trick, but even if I have only 5 minutes I usually try to clean the bathroom - at least wipe down the surfaces, stow the dirty bathmat (guests don't need it), and make sure there's toilet paper. I make the bed, fluff up the couch cushions and stows the inevitable stacks of papers. But of the course the real trick is to try to clean just a little bit every day! Sometimes my friends will do a "pop in" - which isn't my favorite, but does keep me motivated even when I think I'm all alone.

To me, this is just a typical old house in a "transitional" neighborhood in the south - the colors are quirky, offbeat, maybe because the folks inside don't need or want to fit in with encroaching gentrification or just because the paint colors were on sale. It's not everybody's taste but you know that somebody is there taking care of that house - otherwise it would be faded and peeling, like many others that surround it. (PS, I live in Durham and moved here from Atlanta.)
