I don't understand .... how is this any less time consuming than just installing the tile?

Meant to include: You could easily build a floor to ceiling shelving unit and fill it with books/junk to serve as a wall extension. Pipes would be expensive, but the easiest (and still attractive) if you are not familiar with woodworking.

Not really sure how it would look with the rest of the room ...

Is this a rental?

The easiest and most attractive thing to do to "extend" a wall is simply to extend the wall. It's really not at all hard if you have some basic tools and a means to transport materials.

I love how most of the comments are from people deriding the idea of open shelving ...

I put up shelves instead of cabinets in my kitchen because I like the way they look in the space, and saved a considerable amount of money (and it seemed less wasteful as well). I love how they turned out. I've never given a second thought to dust / kitchen grime and we cook everyday.

That said, I feel I should mention that we don't have multiple sets of dishes and kitchen junk to "hide." Everything in the kitchen gets used on a regular basis or we get rid of it. Having shelves forces you to get rid of the clutter. If you don't really want to do that, they aren't for you.

I don't think he sleeps on the bed when it is in the air. the pulleys are just to store it out of the way.

I like the suspended bed idea. The pulley system doesn't seem all that practical and I wouldn't want to sleep in the kitchen, but ... my only real question is why would you want your bathtub next to the kitchen table as in #5?

I really, really like it ... I just don't understand why the parents - on vacation - put bunk beds in the only room and gave it to the kids.

bin_ra, balance bikes/ push bikes do not have pedals. they are meant to teach the child how to balance the bike at lower speeds.

I would bet that only counts as a "DIY" project for maybe 1% of the people visiting this website.
