I think 9/10 (if not more) buyers would prefer painted cabinets to the color you are currently working with. I say paint them-- as long as that's what you want, too. Paint the window/wall/chair rail white, too. Remove the molding stuff from the cabinets. Replace the knobs/pulls with some brushed nickel. Replace the light fixture. Replace the curtain. Right there your not looking at more than a couple hundred.
If you have more money I would say do the countertops before the floor. The floor isn't *that* bad and you could cover up part of it with an area rug.

I live in a rental, too. I ended up applying a woodgrain contact paper I read about on Apartment Therapy (Design Your Wall . com) to the surface of the cabinets. I also bought new pulls for the cabinet. Both together totalled under $100 and gives the kitchen a completely new look. When I move out I will remove the contact paper and put the original pulls back on.

I second (or third) painting the wall and leaving the fireplace as is. What about painting the wall a nice grey/stone color like Sherwin Williams' Alpaca?

Love the first :) And I think the amount of colors and the pattern make it verstatile enough to continue to use even if you want to change up the rest of the room at a later date.

It looks like you have sort of a similar color palette as a previous entry, Kristin's Cozy Village Studio. Check it out. I think she pulled off the serene feel you want very well.

I love the frames (with built-in ledges?) above the couch. Where are they from? And not to be a total mooch- but where are those gorgeous lights next to your bed from?

What are everyone's thoughts on area rugs over carpet? My place is carpeted in the typical neutral carpet color. I want an area rug to help 'identify' the living space as it's own but is that totally weird?
