I have dis-mantled the chair and will strip the wood and see what it looks like without the years of tarnished-varnish. However, I think I will go with re-vanishing the wood. Once done... will consider the color fabric. I will certainly post before and after pictures. I do love working my hands - as my day job is all head work. Thanks for all the advice. It seems all opinions are in favour of restoring rather than painting. After un-screwing the seat and washing the wooden frame with sugar soap and fine grain steelwool I noticed that the wood is spilt in some places and will need to be filled. Curtis the buttons on the back are in fact plastic not wood and came away without any difficulty. I will try an find wooden ones (thanks for the idea) Off to get some varnish stripper and look for some retro purple fabric. auburny... I just bought these in white (from the Aussie website) with the wooden legs as they are the exact match for the eames teak legs on my kitchen table... I saw them in black on ebay... The rule of thumb is not you mix wood finishes... the chair looks like it is finishes in light varnish and the table look like high gloss... all woods go well together but keep the wood finish the same...
