I know you are looking for something in the $400 range but for an inspiration piece I'd look at the Knappa from Ikea. I would use a few in a cluster to create a unique chandelier or find something like it. Apartment Therapy Boston | Good Questions: Bedroom Chandelier Suggestions? |

Like the floating book shelves before it, this looks like a good DIY project. Especially if you can find a book with a really good ironic title. Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | The Book Brush by Arik Levy |

I would use two wood triangles large enough to go from edge to edge cut to the angle that you want the mirror to hang, mount them to the back of the mirrors. The triangles would then become the mounting surface to the wall and create the space to hide the lights and the wires. Glue and screw for best results. I am digging the art on the wall that is an audio wave form. I wonder if it is something specific or a random word or sound? Apartment Therapy San Francisco | Inspiration: Retropolitan |

Does anyone know what the font name or family is for that style of lettering. Retro fonts usually do not include this kind of fonts that were on buildings. Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | Tile Vault: Candies and Cigarettes 60's Square Tile |

I had been waiting for a Speed racer live action film since I was 5 years old (almost 35 years in the waiting) and frankly the makers of the Matrix did not disappoint. I thought the story was good, I liked the fact that it was made as a family film, and the visual design was stunning. Was it a bit long, yes, but small price to pay. The use of the futuro/retro imagery was fantastic. I love the mirror over John Goodman's right shoulder in the screen cap above. I have felt like I was the only person in the world who actually liked the movie. Apartment Therapy Chicago | Inspiration Overload: I Love Speed Racer! |

I just found an identical side table at a goodwill a month and a half ago. I am in process of refinishing it because it was terribly marked up by stains. It was only $9 and i bought it cause it was a Lane piece and looked solid. I didn't know they were collectible. Apartment Therapy Chicago | Plymouth Congregational Church |

To add to wig3000's comment. You often can just save your image as a jpeg on a cdrom and take it to a place where they can print photos from disc. The photopriinting machines don't care that your image is not a photo. That way for a couple bucks (depending on the size of the pictures) you do not have to worry about the image degrading Apartment Therapy San Francisco | SF Good Questions: How Can I Make Artwork Like CB2's? |

My wife and I seriously thought of putting this above our fireplace, but it was too long and pricey. We then thought of DIYing something similar, but we went in a different direction. I am glad other are also thinking of other uses of it, I think it is one of Ikea's better design as of late. It would be cool down a long hallway. These are a great deal, especially when you get the large and the small combo($12.99). I have found that you can do wonders with these just by changing the kind of bulb, I like using a blue bulb. I also hook them up with one of Ikea's dimmer cords, that can also cut the brightness. I have put them behind couches to create a nice glow, and in groupings. You can easily unscrew the lamp out and put a candle in there as well. Currently I have one behind my SO cello as an uplight, works great. I also agree with KateN and Cakekick, take it slowly. Get some magazines that you can cut up that have things in them that you like right now and see how they look in the space. Apartment Therapy New York | NY Good Questions: How Should I Decorate My Apartment? |

I'm with erica on this one, but consider this an entry from your favorite college library in the NYC area. (If you would take entries from all areas, I'd have entered for my own college library, where i happen to be employed) Often college libraries and media centers get neglected. I am going to agree with those who said find one in not great shape, and put the work into it to get it ready. You said you are on a small budget and nothing helps stretch a budget go further than pushing up the shirtsleeves. That being said, however, card catalogs are sturdy pieces, and once you've done the prepwork to get the surface ready to paint, you're going to see some very lovely bare wood (I work in a library and most older library furniture is made of good solid hardwoods meant to last lifetimes and the only real damage is most likely a scratched up or water damaged finish) which you may not want to paint over because (1) the work you just put into the piece; and (2) the beauty of the wood. Use that as an opportunity to judge how you want it to look in your room, and you may find that instead of painting, a stain that may work better with your room's colors is the best answer. Good luck. Apartment Therapy New York | NY Good Questions: Is There Difficulty in Painting This Black? |
