My parents used to host halloween costume parties. It was an easy way to celebrate all of the Autumn birthdays in the family.

After the first one, my mom decided to provide a trunk full of oddball masks near the front door for those who 'forgot'. Throughout the year, she'd collect oddball pieces 'for the trunk.'

The best part was that many guests would leave masks for the next year's party.

It's now and that chaise was made for sex.

I don't approve of the platform base, but that's only because I once helped a friend move her waterbed. Never again.

The mattress is fascinating. Is it latex? Was it manufactured with the cut out at the base or did the furniture maker cut it to fit? With foam, you cut with a bread knife; I wonder if it is the same with latex.

The moira clock is exquisite and I love how she didn't shove gustavian into every cranny. There are just enough hints.

That blue is perfect *photo 33 really shoes some texture* for such a hot climate. I'd love to use the same in my kitchen, but it faces East and I'm in a cold climate.

I also love the contrast between the tiny formal public rooms and the larger relaxed private areas.

It must be comforting to know there are two rooms always ready for visitors.

Like Cashew, I lowered my wattage (before CFLs, whippersnappers) and lowered the height of most lamps. This lent a dawn/dusk glow to the apartment that felt warmer. If I needed brighter light, I'd switch on the ceiling bulbs.

A CFL plant light - pointed down and towards your wall- with easy care plants beneath really does add life to a shade-y room. They don't add anything to your electric bill, and they provide a good place to force paper whites, amaryllis, and tulips.

Plants keep me going during February when it feels like there will never be another Spring.

For the books and table: bitter apple spray *flip table over and spray thoroughly so you are hitting the tongue area when Goober tests chewiness* on the table and lightly sprayed on books crotch level and below. They say to spray daily; I found three days of spraying stopped a teether for good.

Leave one tied-up / messed up book on the shelf for Goober II - unsprayed. It's his book- not yours.

Flor tiles work better than area rugs in an apartment - smaller pieces that you can clean in your sink.
---
I'd leave the shelves alone for now; glass doors break and wood ones would make the place look like a pantry. You may have to start heavily editing your books collection. Babies and their shit take up a bunch of space.

ps CONGRATS!!!!

I love the stairs. The ship method allows a sharper slope so the stairs have a smaller footprint. Because they alternate, the feel/sensation is the same as a regular staircase - but the design dictates which foot you use.

I'd love to see that riser in twenty years; it should be beautifully bruised by then.

Tip1: make a local apartment dumpster tour at 4am the last two days of each month

I used to haul the coolest experiments home early in the morning. I'd throw on some coffee and low music, break open the waterless cleaner or paint, and have a great time without worrying that my activities would disturb anyone.

Tip2: learn to use the butcher/deli - they will give you enough for one person; you don't have to buy three whole chicken breasts at a shot.

Tip3: teacup hook screwed in over the entryway light switch

It's where you hang your keys when you come in and it's where you'll find your keys when you leave.

Tip4: Keep microwave popcorn handy

I have always had neighbors who were into 'adventures in good eating or smoking'. The odors seep into your space. Have countermeasures ready. Microwave popcorn masks more skunky smells.

These work - with the correct water pressure / showerhead combination. Unfortunately, the result is more of a gym shower that gets you in and out faster.

Conservation is going to make bathrooms less spa-like in the near future.

It reminds me of Dr. Seuss.

I'd throw Beth Ditto on it and give her a bat and perhaps a Chihuly pinata.

I like it as it is.

The top back piece should unscrew; it's separate from the center mirror. Actually, you should be able to unscrew the mirror as well - leaving an unsupported shelf on top that you will break as soon as you put something heavy on top.

Save the top two pieces for the future. Those door knobs should be wood and gesso with a rosette.

Re-tighten the hinges on the right door so there isn't a sag.

The Scooba doesn't work in my kitchen - too many chair and table legs to be effective. I actually timed myself. By the time I move all the furniture and sweep, steam mopping adds only five minutes, rag mopping for the ultimate clean on hands & knees takes only fifteen (little foam garden mat to avoid blow job knee). The Scooba takes 35 minutes - if it doesn't cry about getting stuck.

As far as keeping things clean, I've found that sweeping up the concrete outside does more to keep dirt out of the house than anything else. I've also put the dog's water dish as far away from the carpets as possible (she has a beard that dribbles quarts of water at a time.)

I survived a three quarter hour roommate (one class per quarter and he eventually flunked out)and you can survive your roommate. Live with her for another seven months.

1. Get a boyfriend or girlfriend who doesn't mind sleepovers

2. Stay out until bedtime. You should be able to go from work or school to a library, museum, health club, or cafe without carrying around too much stuff.

3. Develop a weird diet regimen that involves kitchen composting

4. Stare and whisper latin when she sleeps

5. Purchase a copy of SWF and play it over and over and over

6. Ask if she'd like to join your church

7. Talk with her mother and bond, bond, bond, baby bond

8. Leave AA/NA literature laying about

9. Sleep with her boyfriend or girlfriend

10. magnets under her laptop

I used Crate&Barrel runners for the back stairway - with double sided tape. The runners look good after three years, two dogs, and four cats.
