I'm surprised at the number of nay-sayers here. If a bunch of fifth-graders can do it, so can we! Are you craftier that a fifth-grader? I'm totally going to make one. It looks like fun. I just hope I don't sustain any injuries (knife slippages and the like).

"the spoon is already present in the wood and the maker is just bringing it out." Didn't Michelangelo say something similar about how he carved David out of Carrara Marble? I think I'll start with the the spoon...

Wow, that's an incredible bookcase. But I feel a but queasy looking at the first photo. It's a bit like a bad trip or a feeling of vertigo.

Pointless. A rope with a few knots in it would cost less, look better, and would be just about as practical. At least you could also tie a bucket to the end of the rope to haul things up.

I agree with ned. Looks like a hospital or morgue - I think I saw the same interior in Chintown (1974) last night.

Holy mackerel, I love it! Totally unexpected. I expected the usual white wash. Looks like an awesome craft room!! I've seen quite a few sad looking houses around this area with the yucky varnished pine vertical joints coupled with bare brick and it just makes me wonder "what is to be done?". But not any more!!

I think you should have thought about how the timber is treated before turning it into something you eat off. Wood used in building is usually treated with Chromated copper arsenate. I found the following information on http://www.csiro.au/Outcomes/Food-and-Agriculture/CCATreatedTimber.aspx...

"The main concern with CCA is that it contains arsenic. While not a mutagen, arsenic acts as a carcinogen when ingested at rates above certain tolerable limits. It may initiate skin and liver cancers."

Of course this in an Australia website but CCA has been used in treating timber in the US and is now somewhat restricted by the EPA - it can only be used in shingles and for permanent foundations. You're better off using untreated timer and by untreated I mean untreated using highly toxic chemicals. Washing and oiling won't do much good. And the fact that they're now unsealed, you've got to think about what you've unleashed.

Aesthetically, the cheeseboards look great. Still wouldn't eat off them, though.

I have done the Vipassana course, too - over Christmas in Australia - I couldn't belive how many people were there - considering is was over the New Year as well - it was great to see.

I had to laugh when I saw the photo of the bottom of the mug - I went a little funny there for the first day or 2 and was reading the labels on my clothes for stimulation before I got over that - I never read the bottom of the crockery, though :D

UGLY. I don't use that word much, and I'm a big fan of kitsch but that is just plain UGLY. Perhaps because it tries to make a statement. Klassy with a capital K. Eurgh.

I have a similar use for old cassette tape drawers - you know those ugly-ass ones that have black drawers and the main part is covered in that plastic woodgrain veneer? They're pretty retro, they sually cost $0.50 to $2.00 at secondhand shops, and they're great for storing cotton thread, tools, and other craft supplies. Craft supply storage can be SO expensive.

Wow, you did a great job, Celeste. It actually makes me a bit sad cos there was a quite nice sideboard in an op shop that was closing down near where I work and I didn't buy it (it was only about AU$20!!!) cos of the ugly laminate which was just like the stuff on the doors of your sideboard. I love the actual wood veneer though and I did pick up a seventies wood veneer bookshelf for $50 and a cute desk for $25. Oh, well, now I know better. :D

Is that pegboard they used on the toilet cupboards and cabinet? It looks great and is a great idea for storage but I wonder how much of a pain it would be to clean and I wonder if mildew would be a problem due to pegboard being like fibreboard.

Hahaha! I thought it was something gross but I didn't see the cat. Hey, what's all this? You can't BUY thrift store smell people! You must learn to appreciate it. Unless, of course, it smells like mothballs or wee.
