IKEA area rug and cheap couch cushions. Small "gamer" chairs. Small trays from Target for beverages and snacks. Hang a cheap IKEA pendant in the corner from a small hook in the wall or ceiling OR hang one off of a branch and fasten that to the wall. (I think that was from the Nester- can't remember!).

I think putting a toddler bed or a chair in there for a reading nook or nap place is okay. I think sleeping in a closet is not a great idea for young children if they have access to better air circulation.

we need some germs to get by but if washing out a washing machine makes people comfortable, that's cool too. this article is for people concerned, saying "gee, i wonder if there are more germs in my house i can clean out." and not so much those who are comfortable with their routine. i'm going to wash my washing machine at least once, now that i've read this (as i've never done it before). and now i know how to do it. =) thanks.

we're a "washable" kids supply household and it gets a little much. we've recycled broken crayons into neat shapes via the micro + ikea ice cube molds. they have the best shapes! little fish, hearts, stars.

i painted my daughter's nursery soft brown because i liked it. gifts were pink so they just sat around lovely. despite a gender-neutral upbringing she decides at three she wants to exist in only purple. so she moves to a new purple room and son is born into brown room. he is attracted to blue and trains and purses (for fashionable practicality of carrying more trains, i'm sure).

imo there's nothing wrong with my story or this lovely post. children will grow into who they ought to be regardless of how long we fret over nursery decor. thanks for heads up on harmonious color combinations. they really are lovely.

More lovin' for Hemnes (yay Philly-Mommas, too!). We have the 8 Drawer and the nightstands in our room. Daughter has the 3 Drawer.

When we're ready for our "grown up" furniture (when babies get out of our bed!), we're pushing the 8 drawer and a nightstand to little girl and the 3 drawer shifts with a nightstand to little(er) boy. We also added white billy bookcases to each room to keep their favorite toys and books. Strong, sturdy, minimal. Love it!

"I think it is terribly rude to walk into other people's homes without asking for permission to keep your shoes on." -Anna

I agree totally. You want your guest to feel comfortable but they're not above house rules. What if your guest wanted to smoke around babies? (or smoke at all?) Surely they'll understand.

Our house rules are: Shoes off at the door, tucked in closet. For nearly every visit. But at parties we allow shoes because we scrub down the house afterward anyway.

-Paint walls a warm neutral
-Sand cabinet faces and doors, Paint white
-New hardware (Ikea- recommend black knobs)
-Declutter
-New Faucet - Something simple and modern
-Tension rod and pocket valance - sew a hem and pocket on vertical striped fabric coordinating with wall color, hang over sink between cabinets
-New set of dish rags and towels to match
--------------
If you've got more to spend, I'd go for a new countertop. Ikea has a ton of inexpensive ones including wood. Just to brighten it up.

Good luck.
