I wish my folks knew the jeans ice bag method. My recollections are of my mom making many, many trays of ice a week before a party & then cracking the trays into plastic bowls & putting them in the extra freezer in the basement. Then the evening of the party, my Dad would take his trusty hammer & bang the hell out of the ice. I thought it was the "warrior" thing he did & that he felt he was providing manageable size pieces of ice for his family & friends.Usually after all this production of ice, my brother & I sat on the top steps outside our bedrooms & listened to the guests clinking their glasses of scotch. Just painted our new master bedroom Benjamin Moore "Love Affair", a plum raisin shade. Mixing with it is copper, rust & deep raspberry shades. Love the warmth with lamp light & the pop in the daytime. Pink & Purple: Unexpectedly Chic |

Your post brings back wonderful trips to Mexico. Watching locals cook their regional foods, is the best way to learn. I especially did that in Greece on idyllic islands with the old ladies wearing black. I can make galactobourrico & baklava like a local. Mexico Through the Avocado Lens |

Anything with Elderflower liqueur in it, is a winner. Since my wedding in 2010, (signature cocktail) I have found ways to use this mild, delicious nectar in & on many foods. Try some on Vanilla ice cream. Recipe: Elderflower Lemon Cake |

As an Interior Designer who has painstakingly scraped off stickers of all kinds from children's furniture & walls, I would not encourage the action of applying them to any surface other than a bulletin board or a fridge door. Children need to learn where their underwear & pjs are. Drawer Organization Stickers Family Find |

I am an Interior Designer who also sew all my client' window treatments. I love to mix fabrics together to create that unique design that sets you apart from all the ready mades out there. Use a band of your darkest fabric at the bottom to visually & sometimes physically, add weight to the panels. Add weighted pieces to the inside of the hem to hold the panels in line properly. A fun & relatively inexpensive rod idea is to use copper tubing. I buy mine at Home Depot & they can cut it to size for you. Get other copper bits in the plumbing dept. to use for end caps. Rings & brackets can be spray painted with Krylon copper metal paint. Hope you like this tip. Making Your Own Curtains: Easy Instructions from Across the Web Renters Solutions |

In most of the rooms, the small area rugs were insignificant. When you put down an undersized rug, it only emphasizes an already small room or makes a larger room appear smaller. Attention goes to the bright addition to the floor & suddenly it sucks in the largess. Punch Up Bland Carpet with Area Rugs Renters Solutions |

Nothing is new. My Grandpa Joe hung jars from under a shelf in the garage in 1952. If you like to collect different jars, it makes a more eclectic look. Filled with buttons, paint tabs, or other colorful items, brings a bright spot in any small space. 5 Hanging Jar Shelves: Declutter Your Workspace! |

A few years ago I entered a contest with Design Within Reach to design a chair/seating with a champagne cork, top ,wire & foil wrapper. I did not win, but it was a fun craft idea. Maybe I will make doll furniture for my granddaughters from them for next year. The Perfect Post-New Year's Craft: Champagne Chairs |

I have a workroom that will make crib sheets to fit your mattress. I also have a resource for contemporary pirate & dinosaur prints. The same fabrics can then be used to make window treatments, bumpers, etc. along with contrasting stripes & plaids. Mixing it up adds sophistication & longevity. You really don't need an upholsterer to do this job. The old fabric comes out by lifting a little from the frame. Replace new fabric. I have done it myself. Tufting also does not work on most plaids, stripes, herringbones or houndstooths as it distorts the weave. Solids, florals or other conversational prints work best. There always seems to be an extra arm or hand dangling between my husband & I. Also numb arms & hurting shoulders do hamper the cuddling for longer than 5 minutes. We end up going to our separate sides. Would You Buy A Cuddle Mattress? |

Not quite sure what your readers were thinking with their votes for 2 of these winners. The "cheerful nursery" & the "serendipitous nursery" are so not winners after all that I saw submitted. I am surprised by the dark green wall with random colorful placements & in the other, the mix of the wallpaper & the rug are just too much. As a designer of children' rooms I am so often suggesting to clients to do a bold accent wall. And once they see a large sampling, they go for it. It takes some getting used to if you are a 4 walls of a kind, kind of person. And not just in kids rooms, all rooms can use that touch of WOW! Accentuate the Positive: 20 Colorful Accent Walls |

Moms & moms-to-be, I have been for the past 28 yrs., an Interior Designer of children's rooms & nurseries. On a recent TV episode of "George To The Rescue" on NBC, I spent several months of sourcing for a room that was "done in a day". One day' "work" looks like one day' results in real life. I have made blackboards for many client' children, but never as a headboard for all the above reasons. Every room has that behind the door wall space with nothing on it. Do it there. The first few feet will be low enough for the youngest to draw on & as they grow, you have the upper part. A Darling DIY Chalkboard Headboard |
