bepsf "You mean the way cars that are no longer new were "Used" - now they're "Pre-Owned"...

...and the way people of a certain age-range were "Elderly" or just plain "Old" - and now they're "Seniors"?"

I guess so - also it is odd seeing furniture and designs I rejected as a twenty year old as "naff" suddenly becoming fashionable. 1920 - 1960 is for me "vintage", although I do admire some James Bond-type 70s design.

I read somewhere that you gravitate more to designs about ten years before you are born, so skipping a generation.

Beth's dressing table - early 60's Heals, looks quite beautiful to me for example.

Anyway, I am so glad those fitted seventies carpets aren't back in fashion.

slowdown, I think common usage has now shifted to "of the past" whereas it used to mean "old and of quality". I do feel that there is a deliberate attempt by some to give value to old rubbish by adding the "vintage" label. (Similarly antique). "Second-hand" used to be the phrase in use - somehow that seemed more honest. However, no doubt some bright fifteen year old is turning up her nose at "vintage" as a description of a genre and inventing anther nae. Neo-vintage or post-vintage..:)

nice ikea desk set up.

It must be a lovely calm house to live in.

Not meant personally and particularly, but I am so fed up of vintage as a term for seventies tat. Maybe showing my age, but any old rubbish is now "vintage" regardless of design or quality. Definitely showing my age, and remembering all that vintage student bedsit furniture I failed to appreciate...

Nikki

Thanks for the info. I'll try replacing the fitting on my thirties standard lamp. Wish me luck!

oh, and what is the kitchen colour - the grey. They are calm warm colours. Quite a feat to achieve that!

And if you don't mind, I was interested to see you remake antique lamps. I have a couple, but the fittings on both (the bit the bulb slots into) have broken. Do you ever have to replace this bit - do modern fittings work?

Lovely rose bedroom. I would be delighted if you would share the paint colour.

Sienna Miller's step-mother is British designer Kelly Hoppen - so I am a bit dissappointed in her house. The bath is great but not all those cushions around it - ech

I have a great (UK) book Marguerite Patten's recipes from the 50's/ 60's. Nothing looks remotely edible.

50s food had to be finicky.. Half a grapefruit stuck with cheese and pineapple cocktail sticks. Stuffed half tomatos with the cut edges shaped into zig zag patterns.

Roll up sandwich logs are great looking and probably taste lovely from what I remember (white bread...)

pate on melba toast with a gherkin garnish

If you are going to have a pudding, then some kind of brightly coloured mousse in individual wine glasses, topped with a cherry is ideal.

Hope it goes well.

Jeannec - thanks for the link - I might make it over.

Do you have tips on what are the other good Paris flea markets?

I also have maine coones and their fur meshes over rugs - even when you think thy haven't been near the rug. It is amazing. I think brushing the cats and hoovering daily, sadly, is the answer. Very flat weave carpets may be better, but even kilims get coated.

I have the same problem - I don't like my worktop either, but I have about 30 feet of worktop. Replacing the whole kitchen would be very disruptive.

My cupboards are similar to yours, although perhaps not quite such good quality. I hesitate to make the leap, as I am worried the paint will look shoddy. To brush paint or spray, for a good finish?

Hi

I am in Edinburgh, UK and signed up at the beginning of this spring cure. I don't think I will be following the cure strictly, but trying to accomplish most things over the period. I am planning my end-of-cure tea party - otherwise there is no incentive. So far I haven't done too much (guilt).

I need to seriously declutter and deep clean, make a list of repairs and do the most pressing, and concentrate on one area, which I think will be the hall (landing strip).

The house is a ground floor and basement flat with a walled garden. It is a great house, but a little impractical in the layout - sitting room upstairs and kitchen downstairs.

The cure makes a lot of sense to me - I bought the book two years ago but haven't felt able to start until now as everything seemed too much (a long period of illness).

I hope to post pictures once I work out how. I have a lots of magazines and links to pictures of homes I like gathered.

First small purchase will be a shaker peg rail. A bit twee, but nice. Heals had a lovely pure wooden one but don't seem to be selling them any longer, so I am looking at this:

I am sure one of these will cure all my clutter problems :)

I don't think I do spend on more than the essentials most of the time - but my definition of essentials (eg what food I buy) may need some tweaking. What this exercise could show me is how I could spend on treats and cut down on some groceries.

It seems prudent now to spend on capital items which may be cheaper as savings get nothing.

Great desk - but are those expedit bookcases? They look like them, but I can't work out if they are slightly more expensive "imitations".
