i LOVE Sonja's setup in her L.A. apt. While they are sharing the same desk, it allows for a collaborative workspace and a little bit of privacy at the same time.

- The secret antique dealers don't want you to know: estate sales. Unfortunately most get picked over early on their start days (usually Fridays) when most of the population is at work. However, I've scored plenty of gems on the second day as well. The best part is they only have one or two days to get rid of EVERYTHING so items are always priced to move!
- Another great secret interior designers utilize: Hotel Surplus / Hotel Furniture Liquidator stores. Just plug those search terms into Google. There's one in almost every major city and because most of the better hotels regularly update their interiors you'll find furnishings from chic boutique hotels to the Ritz.
I personally know of two in Chicago: http://cooperhotelliquidation.com/ and http://fortpittfurniture.com/

Good luck and happy shopping!

mariegael,

LOVE your color choices. also how you've incorporated contemporary art pieces, vintage accessories and furniture perfectly. and props for not being afraid of working with the colors in the fireplace. overall, perfect balance in a seemingly small space. really great job. you have my vote.

also - can you share where you got the white chandelier in the hallway (or maybe it's the bathroom)? have been looking for one just like it!

i spent 5 years in LA after undergrad and acquired so many things - mainly vintage pieces and flea market finds that i LOVE and make my rental space "home" (plus all my A.T. household project components - soooo many, too many unfinished!).

i recently moved to Chicago and well, that move was painful. definitely need to go through and downsize some being that my space here is smaller. and also, especially since i'm possibly relocating overseas. the thought of starting all over again is truly exciting/scary at the same time!

something to throw out there - as i was leaving L.A., my landlord said something that stuck: "love people, not things." (similar to what matt in kc said "That said, they are just "things".") definitely made me feel a bit guilty but when designing/creating/making spaces visually beautiful (not cluttered!) makes you happy/who you are, why should one feel guilty? obviously torn on this.

Michael, LOVE your place. You've made it so warm without even adding color - not the easiest thing to do. Refreshing space for NYC - keeping a place calm, clean and functional is not an easy task. The only shame is that they obviously bricked in an old fireplace long ago. But overall great taste - makes sense that you went to Syracuse as well. ; )

i saw a similar mirror at West Elm a few years back and thought "i can do that" - and so i did! if you don't have the patience for silver leafing, i suggest getting a silver metallic spray paint for the dowels (however the silver leafing will give it nice dimension and make it more realistic). also, depending on how you want yours to be, you can get larger mirrors at ikea (for the center - large mirrors not recommended for the "branches" as the dowels aren't that strong to hold them up!) all the rest of the mirrors can be purchased at Michael's for minimal cost. a suggestion to give give it more depth is variate the length of dowels rather than keeping them all one length. and yes, they may have it on sale at Target but making your own just gives you so much more satisfaction!

hi taraknits,

Awesome find, but wanted to help you out before you spend $50. That's for the web resolution of 501 KB / 72 dpi / 4.5" x 7.5" / RGB. Great for just having on your computer but as a printed out image to hang is a different ball of wax. I work in the industry and for a digital image to print out without being obviously pixelated, the quality standard is at least 300 dpi (that one's 72 dpi). You could risk it and try to up-res in Photoshop, but it depends on the original scanned file (but i have serious doubts if you could do this, as then everyone would just buy the 72 dpi and up-res as opposed to buying the pricier 300 dpi). So unfortunately if you want to print and frame, to get a quality image, you'd have to go with at least the Med. Resolution, but that could only print up to image size 6.4" x 10.8" - any larger and that would start to pixelate pretty obviously. Just look at the size dimensions of the 300 dpi's listed and that's the maximum size they could be printed at in decent, non-pixelated quality. Sorry to be sucha Debbie Downer but didn't want to see you spend the 50 bucks and then be disappointed.
