i agree with the pocky recommendation--always a favorite with kids and adults. fruity japanese gummy candies are also really popular and the tubes of chocolate covered gummies are unusual and fun. a good option for a savory treat are the packets of small seaweed (nori) squares--you can eat them like chips--or chinese-style beef/pork jerky.

I think it partly depends on where one lives. Being residents of a small college town, dinner parties (with or without children) seem to be par for the course given that there are few options (especially student-free zones) for socializing.

i can envision the rocker moving from moving room according to mood, climate, and other factors. it would be perfect in an empty corner of our living room for a little frolicking in the afternoon soon, or perhaps in our basement during the warmer months for a bit of cool playtime.

my son (20 months) loves to look at books and listen to music... a new story or CD is always a treat.

FYI i have a blu dot modulicious dresser that i purchased in summer 2006. less than a year later, the paint on the side of one the dresser drawers began to peel off. i glued it back and it looks fine, at least for now. however, considering the price i expected not to experience this kind of problem.

donating books to prisoners is an environmentally and socially conscious way to pass along books to people who want and need them.

for me, the ultimate comfort food is cantonese jook (aka congee)--thick rice porridge that comes in endless variations (chicken, fish, dried scallops, dried oysters, thousand year old egg, etc.).

we are definitely a hot-sandwich family (how can you beat grilled cheese for lunch on a wintery day?), but unfortuantely our "vintage" sandwich press (a hand me down from my brother's college dorm days) recently suffered a major casualty. the grill and press would help us recover nicely and stylishly from this mini-tragedy. thanks!

hi rita,
since you're in NYC, you could try making a trip out to the dwr annex in secaucus (or just give them a call). depending on your budget, you might get lucky... i found a theatre sofa there at a substantial discount. i recall there were several theatre chairs too.
good luck!

i purchased an eames rocker at a deep discount (which is really the only reason we have) when our son was 3 months old. admittedly, it isn't the most comfortable chair (i actually nursed my son quite a bit in the IKEA poang chair which i like b/c the back is much higher) but i've added a couple of pillows--one for my back and one for under my arm/his head, which help a lot. we use the chair every night to give him a bottle before bed. he likes sitting in the eames rocker, too!

dear becky,
like you i lusted after the high-end cribs (oeuf at al) but having only recently finished graduate school and begun working (for pay, that is) i couldn't justify such a high end expenditure on something my son will only be using for two or three years. so my husband and i did buy the jenny lind. not my favorite, to be sure (i tried to get the gulliver at IKEA but found out a few months ago that they are no longer being sold, at least at that time) but it works. we splurged instead on couple of items that will be around much longer--a blu dot modulicious no. 4 dresser doubles perfectly as a changing table and an eames rocker (at half off retail price--a DWR annex score!)--both of which bring me much happiness! remember, at the end of the day, it's just a crib. as long as it's safe, that's what matters. your baby won't sleep better in an $800 vs $100 bed!
