I'm sorry but I just had to chime in. Stop calling us Baby Boomers "midcentury." It's some ridiculous new buzz word like that other one, "Boho". Baby Boomers are hip, not the middle of the century like we're from the Civil War.

As far as teak, nobody *I* know would have it in our homes. If we wanted to appear hip we'd go REAL vintage that's ATTRACTIVE and not those hideous and boring legs. I'm from Santa Cruz, CA. It's not like we are unhip here.

Here is what *I* would do if I were so desperate for a table I had to take anything I got, find one of those fabulous vintage green paints. The kitchen cabinets in my funky apt were ugly dark laminate. Now they are vintage green. I call it my on purpose look, in other words if you have lemons make lemonade and pretend that it came this way. Now my old place looks like it all fits in. If you want to do this "midcentury" deal then don't get teak. If you do then paint it a vintage green. Try Dutch Boy Fresh as Spring. Give it time to set up, if there is sun in your kitchen, you'll impress all your "Boho" buddies. Linda

Brother, I saw that shepherd and knew I had to chime in. My Lucy will be 11 on January 1, she is also the black and tan. Had her since 4 months old. "The horror, the horror." It took her until 8 years old to BEGIN to mellow, thank GOD when that happened.

It's the same thing you will learn with the new baby. Baby proof as the dog reaches each stage of development. Close doors for one thing, unplug most things, put the garbage up high when you leave the house. Most definitely buy a reel for your hose in the yard so they won't chew it up. Can't tell you how many hoses I went thru until I figured that out.

I bought an area rug and paid a mere $400 in y 2 k and the thing has held up and is in beautiful condition. I got it in a berry and teal and a very busy pattern. Very oriental rug. $500 is enough. Scotch Guard built in. The thing has held up and still is in terrific shape. Invest in a carpet steamer while you're at it. My rug has absolutely no stains underneath because of the built in Scotch Guard. The steamer handles any surface muck and odors.

Anyway baby proof for dogs as you will learn to do for the baby. With the baby it will come naturally. When you got the dogs you didn't have the baby so it didn't come naturally. The baby will chew on books or anything else within its reach. It will come to you as you go.

I DO go on. Thanks, Linda from Santa Cruz, CA

Bummer, it's a bachelor pad. Look at that bdrm and rug. And the colors are guy all the way. Your only concession was the red chairs in the dining room. Other than that you should have giant leather furniture and a big ol' entertainment center. In no way is that a girl's bdrm, it is totally batch all the way. So sad for your girlfriend.

Aren't those terra cotta tiles in the entrance to the Veterans Memorial Bldg on Front St.? The bldg was erected in the 30's. The tiles are very dark now but they're beautiful. Call the VMB and ask the mgr if they are indeed terra cotta and, with all the traffic in and out of the bldg, the mgr would definitely know the pros and cons. Think of the huge holiday meals sponsored by Bill Motto Post and sometimes it rains Xmas Day. Yes he would know. Linda

Oh yes, those levers are wonderful. I still remember my Aunt Eva's flat on Union near Powell. We rang the bell 3 times so she'd know it was us. This went on for generations, everyone still does the 3 ring thing, her son inherited her flat.

There have to be restorers around SF for the Victorians. I AM kind of puzzled however that yours it on the 3rd floor. That means you don't know who you're letting in on the first floor. Perhaps this is why the lever was disabled. Is there remmants of a tube there also?

Ahhh I love The City. What about those great bathrooms, tub and sink with toilet separate? And the wonderful hallways?

P.S. WHOOPS a typo.

"...really for the next on a hot day." I meant to say READY for the next on a hot day.

Apartment Therapy Chicago | Good Questions: Painting over Lacquer?

I can paint furniture like nobody's business, here is what *I* would do. Sand first to give it some "tooth". Just rough it up is all you have to do (wipe it down to get the dust off). Then I use Kilz water based primer which is white. I always do 3 coats minimum. Then comes the paint and I think you said you want shiny so get some enamel paint in the color of your choice. Enamel is hard to spread so I might go with semigloss or even flat then you'd coat it a bunch of times with MinWax water based polyurethane in the gloss level of your choice.

Now, for brush marks. Sherman Williams sells these wonderful sponge rollers. With each pass of the roller, have a brush handy. Feather it out with each stroke of the roller. That'll do it and you'll get really fast at it. Feather with the Kilz primer, paint and feather with the paint, feather with the poly. It'll work and I'd know since I've painted countless pieces of furniture. Your first and maybe second Kilz coats will look bad but just keep on til it's smoothly covered. I got so good at this I could knock out a piece or two a day.

You can have a coat on that coffee table in 20 minutes. If it's really hot outside you can add coats pretty fast because, by the time you finish one coat, it's really for the next on a hot day.

P.S.

If you can find some ready made cord at the fabric store then all you'd have to do is use a hot glue gun to fasten it.

I grok. Do you have a sewing machine? Do you know how to make your own piping? Look it up on the web, it's really fun to do then you can choose your own fabric. I find choosing fabric the hard part. At the fabric store they have rolls of various sizes of piping then you cover it.

The other way is to go to the fabric store and ask them what you can use so you don't have to make your own piping. Fabric store employees are so helpful and, in my experience, they all know how to sew.

The comment wasn't finished up in the article. I thought for sure they would finish the thought on line drying.

What if you use a washer but hang your stuff outside to dry? If you put the dryer sheets into the wash will that keep any lint from clinging to your black jeans or tops before you even hang them outside?

Thanks, Linda

I don't care about close ups of white walls.
I don't care about what's inside your fridge.
I don't care about close ups of vignettes.
I don't care about close ups of your cat.

I gave up half way thru the video because what I REALLY wanted to see was the actual apartment.

Thanks.

What I have always done is never give out the doorknob key. To any boyfriend who needs a key, I tell them there is no key to the doorknob. Once they're gone I just start locking the doorknob until the coast is clear. It would be better the other way around by telling them you only have a doorknob key but that's not safe and you need the deadbolt. They might also buy a deadbolt and key out of the kindness of their heart and that would be a waste.

So I just stick to my doorknob story and it has served me well for as long as I can remember. NObody gets a doorknob key, I just lie about it from the start. You could say I need to trust a boyfriend but one must always think about what the future might hold. Many men have a sense of entitlement even when they're gone and if you ever have the misfortune of having an ex who likes to piss on your boundaries then keep the doorknob key forever. Born in San Francisco, raised in Santa Cruz and have never heard of a slug problem inside a house.

The suggestions about garlic and salt won't work because your dog loves garlic and probably salt too. I have gardened with and without snail bait. The bait attracts snails in droves so I don't use it and I don't get snails. Some of these remedies will get you slugs but, as the name inplies, it's merely bait and will get you more than you asked for. Like so many before me said, it has to be structural. Your house must be damp and musty?

Yes, the bluish paint brand and color please. My landlord is ok with me using this color in my living room but it's hard to hold a paint chip up to the computer. Printing it doesn't work either. I'm sure the shade will be off a bit from the website compared to the store but it's a start anyway.

Thank you
