What, women don't need public urinals?

One other idea, which I use with my 8-year-old:

Would she notice if you just "did away" with some things? I put unused stuff in boxes in the basement (has to go in a box out of sight). She never notices that something is not in her room, but if she sees the stuff in the basement she MUST have it back upstairs again. After I'm sure it's safe I throw the stuff out.

I know this isn't respectful, but in our case it's the parting with stuff is the problem rather than a need to have it.

Wonderful Shopsin's Restaurant has (or had) this with a chicken base. I've been faking a version for years, so thanks for the recipe!

Isn't that what unfinished handmade rugs always look like? (before all the warp is woven into the weft)

Thanks for the excellent tutorial! I love the dumpling rosette, which explains volumes about patience in cooking well!

I think we'll have a style-of speech change because of Obama:

OUT: Fake Folksiness, and "dumbing down"
IN: Using correct grammer and vocabulary

I blame Reagan for the downward spiral we've had the last couple of decades. Maybe that paradigm has been supplanted.

I do regret a change I made in the 1980's when everything had to be Conran's white: I ripped out a tiny kitchen cabinet to put in something more capacious.

The thing is, that tiny, roach-encrusted cabinet was white enamel with red pinstripes, probably from the 40's. I wish it was still there for someone to enjoy! I could have put a book shelf in the kitchen to hold the bigger food boxes. The roaches would have come off with a lot of Bon Ami! I feel terrible when ever I think of it.

And here I thought it was an artwork by Andrea Zittel:

I also noticed that the new cabinets go all the way up to the ceiling. This looks MUCH better, but I bet it's more expensive to do, particularly in an older, not-so-perfectly square room.

We had an ikea table that had the same up/down mechanism. We loved it, and this looks much nicer, so, yes. Get it.

Also, you can take pictures of stuff you feel connected to but don't really want to keep (mom's pewter collection?)

Those files take up almost no room on your hard drive.

My friend's dad kept the hen up there one winter. Apparently the henhouse was too cold in January. Mostly she just sat in her nest.

My Lithuanian grandma made something like this in her Chicago walk-up apartment. She scalded 1/2 gallon of whole milk, then mixed in a quart of cold buttermilk to get the curds to separate. She salted the curds before draining out the whey first with a drip bag, then pressing the mass under a weight.
I love saag paneer but I never thought to use this cheese for it!

My coop on Thompson and Prince rented to a film with Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts. Oops! The amount of money paid for the location fee did not really cover the additional taxes the coop had to pay for violating something called the 80/20 tax rule. (only 20% of a coops' income can come from sources other than shareholder maintenance)

The one person who rented the INSIDE of her apartment made out ok, though.

I had the same outcome (holding it FOREVER) as in bostonkayla's post. The cats just wouldn't take the leap from "toilet with cat-protection" to "totally normal toilet". I think if I'd had a second bathroom, I would have stayed at the last step of training a lot longer. I guess they just didn't have enough time to get comfortable.
