How about a free-standing pergola across the back covered in vines or climbing roses as a refuge from the sun? Underneath you could have a patio. Both you could easily do yourself and at your leisure. Look for Earthkind roses for hearty, low maintenance ones and start them right away.

How Can I Add Interest To \"Blank\" Side of House? Good Questions

I would suggest baby steps if you can take them - the counter tops and the appliances might be less offensive with the cabinets painted and new hardware installed but this is a process you don't want to rush. Doing a good job on them is relatively easy but tedious and involves a few coats of paint and lots of sanding in between coats. I like the suggestion of adding trim work to upgrade the look with only a little extra effort. Big box stores have deals after Christmas on surfaces so can you wait until then? The stove does look quite small but getting a new one will require extensive adjustment to the counter top and cabinets only a contractor could do, so do it now if this a requirement of the professional chef. You will lose counter space but if you can get that microwave off the counter you will regain some. Can you tie a new microwave in with an exhaust fan above the stove which you will really appreciate after all the work you plan to do on the cabinets and almost seems a necessity? Also, if you go for white paint for the cabinets make sure the white doesn't clash with the existing appliances. Good luck and you are very lucky to have the freedom of choices.

What Can I Do with $2000 to Update This Kitchen? Good Questions

I look forward to reading other posters' ideas because I have no idea how you can blend your furniture. The apartment looks delightful but the bookcases jump out and make the place look claustrophobic. Any way you can paint them to make them disappear into the walls? It is likely that this will be a reoccurring problem so time, effort and money won't be wasted for future apartments. Even just starching or stapling some fabric to the back will stop those bookcases from sucking out so much light, but the desk part is fine. The chairs don't seem to work with the couch. If you kept the couch go for a bright red and/or dark plaid vibe since the couch seems very masculine. The chairs seem very 50s so tie them together with some faded chintz pillows that picks up both colors and is echoed in some painted furniture, artwork and on a white slipcovered sofa, but right now the focus is on the mismatched furniture so shift the focus upwards with plants and pictures. Milo Baughman did a similar chair with arms for Thayer Coggin and I think it's even prettier. We bought one for $8oo in black leather few years ago so do some googling and you might find one.

Google the Peter Wentz Farmstead in Montgomery County Pennsylvania for various colonial decorative paint treatments that will knock your socks off in their brightness and modernity. I tried an adaption of the circle treatment (from an old Martha Stewart Living) in my former dark colonial kitchen - lighter yellow circles on slightly darker yellow walls and it looked great and won approvals from all who saw it. A little of this goes a long way as the traveling colonial painters understood. You could always do this over wallpaper meant to be painted then remove it when you move. A big thank you for your family's service.

Like the room. Like the dots, but think they should have been smaller and placed in a random pattern. It feels sophisticated yet cozy and no longer claustrophobic.

The easiest one for me is to slather the salmon in a cilantro pesto (with garlic, lemon and oil) done in a food processor. Any leftover pesto can be used on chicken, quinoa etc. (My go-to salmon is wild caught frozen Keta from Alaska which sells for $9.99 to $12.99 for 24 ounces at Target.)

If they are really maple and you can get the doors back to a real maple color, not a stained maple then it might be worth it. The Scandi look of pale wood is very desirable and may score you big bucks at resale. Maybe set up a work station and do 4 or 5 at a time over a long weekend every year until you are finished. Just think of their beauty soon and their desirability at resale. I would also update the hardware unless the whole house is retro.

If you don't like the couches (or even if you do) "neutralize" them by making them disappear into the the bottom part of the wall by paint (if you can) or by wallpaper (which can be removed) maybe in a paisley. I would love to see the room go in a Moroccan direction so I love the above suggestions on the use of purple, orange and gold. Even just hanging some exotic fabric on rods in that semi-nook area might work. A kelim below the couches and some spectacular gold framed mirrors and an exotic light feature or two above would also help focus attention away from them although I think you might grow to like those couches with the right treatment. Lose the white pillows and go for a darker color. As for the dining room - lose the colored curtains and opt for white because the wall is too small to break it up, but you could use colorful vertical trim.

Cold light? Warm Light? No light? Will the room be a playroom as well as a sleeping room? Will it store lots of colorful toys in open storage? Why not just stick to a white 'til inspiration comes and the room takes on its final configuration and purpose? Or opt for a very pale taupe over grey?

So glad to hear that this paint holds up well. I am planning to paint my "refaced" cabinet doors but thought only Ace Hardware had such paint. I do love the sheen from a semi-gloss oil paint though. Latex paint (to me) always has a plastic look compared to oil.

If your kitchen is small and your cupboards are white I would think a white stove would be the choice, but I have found the same stove in white looks clunky but in stainless looks sleek. Nevertheless I'm weary of all the streaks and sticky handles on the the frig and dishwasher so I'm glad I have a white stove.

Since the front of your house is very narrow I would not introduce any color - making features "pop" is for a larger space for drawing attention to or away from certain features. If you can't paint your trim then make your front doors and door trim in a deep rich chocolate in a high gloss, high quality paint maybe with a purple tinge. This would coordinate with your trim and brick color but avoid the dollhouse look. Of course removing the aluminum door will give you a more attractive exterior but having the opportunity for a breeze that it allows is an advantage so just paint it out. If you can paint the trim go for a high gloss black or a very, very dark green for doors and window trim. The awning over the front door looks very dated and I would aim to upgrade with canvas or a complete redo of the front porch. Concentrate on the landscaping for extra curb appeal and I've had great luck with Knock Out roses in pink and coral. The house next to mine is pink brick like yours and I love it.

Investigate a savory Indian favorite for breakfast using Cream of Wheat (or in my case Cream of Rice) called upma or uppuma. Recipes will vary, as will the level of spices and heat but basically you saute the cream of Wheat in a flavored oil to which you have added some vegetables and then cook it off with added water to create a savory porridge.
