we have a strand of LED string lights always on in the house so it's not in total darkness. we also have another lamp on with a CFL bulb and timer. My neighbors leave their garage lights on as well so it's pretty well lit when I get home.

the hummers seems to enjoy my pineapple sage (salvia elegans) flowers. it's a perennial here in the PNW and comes back each year. they don't bloom till sep/oct here but the pretty red flowers attract the birds. good luck :)

we have a free weekend too and we are making mark bittman's grilled chicken adobo, stir fried bok choy and rice. tomorrow, it's shakespeare in the park with a picnic.

i've also used the hose to send the aphids off the plant. you just have to be vigilant and check to make sure they stay off. they usually do. i've done this on my euphorbia (aphids love those!) and st john's wort.

definitely space-saving and great for vacuuming under it, as K and aaron agree.

but it's true, it might be a doable DIY. although the red lacquer-esque finish is to die for.

we don't live in a city apartment but we love our minka aire concept I and II fans in the kitchen/dining area, living room and bedroom. we got the concept I for our bedroom because the ceiling was fairly high. they are essential for warmer summer days since 2 of those rooms are south-facing.

we bought them online from Farreys.

ceiling fans do cool you down considerably and it has helped our radiant heating work more efficiently in the winter.

It sure is pretty and I've been tempted but I wonder how these would hold up to squirrels. I used to have a bird feeder but it became a squirrel feeder.

Definitely go with a chocolate brown - we used Lowes' home brand and a shade called "Fudge Truffle". We absolutely love the impact of the rich color.

White really pops against the brown and your floor will probably fade into the background. We did all our walls in that brown but used white on our ceiling so it won't feel so enclosed. We also build a frame for the mirror and used a glossy white paint, it really stands out against the wall.
