Dropcloth--always use one. I think one of the first times I was painting a room (age 12) I just had to do a little touch up and brought the can of paint and a paintbrush across to the other side of the room (not on the dropclothed area) set down the paint can and just happened to knock it over. Paint is not easy to clean off carpet :( I think a chest of drawers ended up going in that spot...

hire movers!!!!!

i could have saved myself physical therapy for my back and a bum knee had i been not as stubborn and just hired movers two years ago. this year i did hire movers and it was ridiculous how much more efficient they are than me while being just as careful.

it's actually Greensboro in Hale County Alabama. The HERO center is an amazing source in the community there. I lived in Greensboro for 6 months working on one of the Rural Studio projects (a couple of the HERO buildings were rural studio projects). I hope she enjoys her stay and I'm sure she will meet some wonderful people!

# 11 reminds me of Roman Holiday when Audrey Hepburn is totally wasted and Gregory Peck rolls her off the couch onto the bed facing the wrong direction. I remember when i was little i used to make my bed the wrong direction sometimes just to mix things up because my mom wouldn't let me hang posters or decorate my room.

I have 4 out of 5 of these things and use them all all the time. i live in a teeny tiny nyc apt with a closet the size of a coffin and the steamer is one of the best things i have. it gets wrinkles out a lot faster than ironing and has a retractable pole, so it ends up being pretty compact to store. i got it as a gift from my mom and thought i would never use it, but i guess mom knows best...

a carpeted dressing room with perfectly organized shelves of clothes and shoes, a chaise lounge, and an old hollywood glam mirrored vanity for sure! *sigh*

...oh, and a living room that isn't my bedroom ;)

i'm dealing with this same problem right now. there was a fire in my apartment building and smoky water came into my apartment and everything smells awful. here's what i've done to almost eliminate the odor:

1. mop floors and wipe everything hard down with vinegar/water (including floors and furniture)
2. mop floors with dawn dishwashing liquid/water
3. febreeze, febreeze, febreeze
4. wash all fabrics with a little bit of febreeze poured in with the detergent
5. baking soda in bowls around the room
6. vinegar in bowls around the room
7. fresh coffee grounds in bowls (absorbs odors as well)
8. baking cakes and cookies. unconventional and temporary, i know, but at least it puts a better smell in the air than gross smoke smell :)

i haven't tried the lemons but i guess that will be on the agenda for this weekend!

kkbutler- i've refinished some upholstered chairs that smelled of smoke and the only thing i found that helped was spraying them in febreeze all over and repeating several times(don't forget the underside)

i've thought i might have a strange version of lactose intolerance- i only have bad reactions to cream or fatty cheeses that have been cooked. is this weird?? i can drink milk all day long and eat cream cheese if it hasn't been cooked, but as soon as it turns into a cheesecake i'm screwed. does anyone know why this is???
