Does modern mean modern or contemporary? The kitchen is far from modern. If you paint, paint them black, red or orange not white. As stated before, get rid of the glass blocks. Silver leaf the whole piece and put some bold knobs on it. Or do a high gloss black paint on the whole thing, I did this on some old furniture it looks great. After doing many gold leafing jobs, I would advise you to use either gold leaf size or spray adhesive. Do a test run on a small piece of your wall or a piece of wood. After the foil is adhered burnish the foil a soft cloth. I prefer Rolco brand Aquasize Water-base Gold Size.
