I once had a mother-in-law stay for 3 weeks, just after we'd moved into our new house. She painted walls with the color of her choosing, rearranged furniture, tried to unpack our boxes w/o asking, did our laundry (even my panties and bras! Ack!). She is no longer my MIL. I once rented a (very small) room in Prague with books stacked floor to ceiling along the length of 2 entire walls.
