And packaging is a huge problem in UK grocery stores, far more so than in the US. It's close to impossible to buy unpackaged produce in London stores, for example. So this store is quite a novelty.

I second the importance of light - photography means writing with light. But if you want to be taking close up food photographs, I think you'll ultimately need a macro lens, which means you need an SLR rather than a point-and-shoot. The Smitten Kitchen blog, which has gorgeous food photos, has a handy guide you should check out.

I've not found any that don't look hideous, and have stocked up on incandescents before they're taken off the market in the UK in a couple of weeks.

Of all the wasteful things developed countries do, heating the outside is one of the worst. Here's a thought - when it's not outdoor dining weather, dine inside instead.

The thing about exterior paint is: yes, obviously it's your decision and the neighbours have no right as such to make requests. BUT - they'll end up looking at it a lot more than you do from the inside.

Also in San Francisco (21st St, if you're curious), there's a real crotchety bastard who painted his house a horrible shade of purple with clashing yellow trim expressly to piss the neighbours off. He's the same guy who dumps tons of bird feed on the street to attract the pigeons. So, not a shining example of neighbourly behaviour, all in all.
