My husband and I live in a neighborhood adjacent to the Downtown of a mid-size Ohio city. It's affordable, has a great sense of community and is very creative. We were mostly attracted to the Victorian homes-- and wanted to contribute to the reclamation effort. Many houses here are bought in cash by Generation Yers and renovated. The lifestyle has won us over. We walk downtown with our friends, have dinner, see a show, go shopping. I enjoy riding my bicycle to the library and to work. We are now looking for a larger house to renovate- leaving because of a baby has never crossed our minds.

I grew up in the suburbs in the late eighties and early 90s-- in probably one of the first McMansionvilles in West Michigan. I loathed it with every fiber of my being. My parents had to shuttle me every where I wanted to go, even in High School. There was very little independence. I spent most of my time shut up in my room, brooding. Downtown was where you went to have fun, see a show--but if you stayed out too late bad people would get you.

I don't want that experience for my children. My perspective is that good parenting will overcome many of the differences between urban and suburban living. I like the diversity of living in the city- diversity of races, economic backgrounds, jobs, etc. I love that in my neighborhood, a surgeon lives next door to an iron worker, who lives next door to a philosophy professor. These neighbors are people my children can learn from; even if there are still challenges.

I have a glass cooktop and I absolutely loathe it. with every fiber of my being. I hate cleaning, as it is perpetually dirty even after the shortest of tasks. Everything sticks to it.

I know that they can crack if you use cast iron. My mom did it about ten years ago on a JennAir, after she had it installed only a few days prior. If you want to use cast iron, it will definitely be a risk. What I do is transfer food that I have sauteed or partially cooked to cast iron and then put it under the broiler. Cast irony flavor, no cracked cooktop.

I really like this- I don't think I'd try it in my home, though.

With a really, really old house- everything is crooked. I find that geometric designs only enhance the crooked/uneven floors and walls.

It's extremely humid in the Cincinnati area where I live. Ceiling fans are a must, AC is highly recommended on very humid days. We've had about a week of really nice, cooler (low 80s) weather and I turned off the AC. I've enjoyed it. I like listening to the birds in our yard and I feel more aware of our neighborhood and surroundings.

I love Michael's house. I grew up on Michigan's coast, and have really fond memories of going to the lake house.

Michael's house is so clean and crisp, but still beachy. It's not at all like the loved, careworn cottages of my memories. Still, I like it a lot.

Another place to consider is Saugatuck, Michigan. It's absolutely beautiful, and has a fun, kitschy aesthetic. When I was a kid, it was always filled with visiting Chicagoans in the summer.

Mine are not ready yet. I have lots of green tomatoes that look big enough to start turning- but nothing yet. I do have a lot of cucumbers and eggplant already though. I thoroughly enjoyed the first eggplant harvested.

I like whatever fresh, local peaches come my way. We had a red haven peach tree in my yard until it unexpectedly died in a storm. It gave the most wonderful, delicious yellow peaches I have ever had. I miss them.

After several attempts, I changed the recipe a bit to better mimic the Northstar burger.

I added:

1/4 cup reconstituted chopped dates
1/4-1/2 cup rolled oats as the binder, depending on liquidity of mixture
1 chipotle in adobo diced finely

Lastly, I grated the beets and doubled the amount of brown rice. The burgers hold together much better and are easier to eat when the beets are less chunky.

I love popovers so much! Plain, with jam, compound butter. I love them!

I really like King Arthur Flour's guaranteed popover recipe. It's easy, and has never failed. I've used it at least four or five times in different weather conditions and it has not failed.

Does anyone know if casters can be attached to it?

I need something just like this, but it must have casters so it can sit atop my dorothy style hatch basement.

I make a lot of home-made pasta. I don't think 00 or durum flour is necessary, but it definitely makes superior pasta. I find that fresh pasta made with all-purpose flour needs to be cooked a lot longer and is less tender. I can't make finer pasta, like angel hair, with all-purpose because the dough becomes too stiff and unmanageable.

HeyNowTex,

I do understand it from a renter's perspective, but I have seen in my own neighborhood how beneficial long-term renters can be. They can be just as invested in the neighborhood as homeowners.

Having in lived in DC, I understand how expensive LA can be! One of the many reasons I moved back to the mid-west.

I found this post disturbing, frankly. For those of us in mid-size cities, moving to a "new part" of town often means moving to the suburbs. This post flies in the face of neighborhood building initiatives, which advocate homeownership and long-term commitments to neighborhoods.

I think you can find new enthusiasm in your own city in more productive ways, like volunteering to help others, getting involved in a neighborhood/historic association, or even just helping out a neighbor. I have a friend who recommitted to the city after a ride-along in a city patrol car. For me, I try to switch up the places I go to. I try to visit the farmer's market every other week, so it always feels fresh and exciting. Occasionally, I like to visit nearby cities for a fun excursion. I'm always happy to come home.
