i don't use them. i always ask for my clothes to be folded, whether laundry or dry cleaning.

i then have a closet full of wood hangers (dirt-cheap from ikea) and hang my clothes when i bring them home.

search ebay for zebra rugs and you'll also find several people/companies selling zebra print cowhide (and possible non-animal) rugs.

or you could buy a plastic wiffle ball and save having to drill the holes. just paint the inside and then hang.

shorter, wider furniture. a surfboard coffee table. try to sell the expedit media center on craigslist and get something shorter and wider or even build something simple with painted plywood.

definitely lighter colors.

for the walls, consider smallish pieces (8 x 10 b&w photos would be good) in a line across at about 57" high.

for the wall behind the couch, consider a grouping of 4 11x14 mirrors in simple black frames to give the impression of a window.

floorwise, ideally something with horizontal stripes parallel to the plane of the room or a good zebra print (the one from west elm is a good, inexpensive choice).

why all the xenophobia? does it really matter if irish or germans or anyone else is buying real estate in new york? point the finger at our own government who continues to spend $14 billion/month on a war we never should have been in and will never get out of, causing our national debt to skyrocket (and be bought up by the chinese government), thus making our dollar worth squat and encouraging foreign investors to by manhatan property.

if you want to fault anyone, point the finger at the current administration in the white house whose terrible economic policies are squeezing the middle class into virtually nothing, and the state of new york, which under the pataki administration syphoned federal appropriations for affordable housing to his own pet projects outside of new york city.

the broker route costs money, but it's definitely worth it. chris morely at citihabitats always does a terrific job.

if you do use a broker, make him earn his money. be specific about what you want, demand he show you what you want to see, and don't think you're going to find an apartment in a day or a weekend. plan on several different outings with your broker over the course of 2 weeks or so.

and once you've found the place you want, spend a couple of days making the fat f**k [not applicable to chris] show you every 6th floor walkup you have no intention of renting, just to make him sweat a little.

i have the same cabinets in my rental studio and i hated them. so i put a primer on them and painted them with chalkboard paint. looks better, more modern and allows you to jot grocery lists, recipes, etc. on them. and with 3 windows and a white countertop, you don't have to worry about it making the room too dark.

it is an absolute crime - that people don't like this design. it is clean, simple and beautiful.

the world has enough bad louis the whatever'th furniture. another dollhouse based on 400 year old archaic design principles is the last thing europe (or anywhere else) needs.

should we then also argue that because the house didn't originally have indoor plumbing that they should have to do their business in a shed in the back? or in chamberpots?

since i live in an east village tenament, should i be forced to furnish it with furniture from that period and move the bathtub back into the kitchen?

this is where someone lives, and for others to deride her for making this home her own is uncalled for.

i very often bite my tongue at other posters' choices of awful furniture and tasteless design.

i may not like it, but i refrain from criticising.

but maybe now the not-so-stylish members of this community have opened the gates for me to speak my mind about porcelain cat collections, ugly furnishings, laying rugs over carpet, etc.

i'm just sayin'.

home depot's behr paint brand makes a product called interior/exterior wet-look sealer (no. 985 hi-gloss).

i've used it on concrete floors and it works and looks terrific. product information also says it can be used on brick.

it's inexpensive, easy to apply (roll on a coat, let dry for an hour or so, and roll on another.

this reminds me of a funny story. back in the day when the meatpacking district was really the meatpacking district, it was a hangout for downtown party girls (and guys) and trannies, basically. one woman who was kind of queen of the party scene had a favorite pair of tights with some japanese symbols on them.

early one morning, she's capping off a night of partying at the florent diner. a japanese couple, who were tourists, i believe, were sitting at the next table. they started talking and she stuck out one of her legs to show them her favorite tights.

the japanese woman looked somewhat aghast and embarrassed, while the man was laughing.

"you know what they say?" the man asked.

"something about love," the party queen answered.

"sort of," he said. "they say you're a dirty whore who likes it from lots of men."

then, as if to add insult to injury, he said, "the other leg, too."

so just a warning. if you're going to wear/hang foreign symbols, make sure you know what they mean first.
