I agree with Blandwagon. Focus on working out your own design style and creating a cohesive room - it will help you in your future homes as well. Many people are suggesting that you add more colour, but given the lack of it at this point, I am assuming that perhaps you are not particularly drawn to colours. Neutrals can look great when done right. Artwork and adding texture with soft furnishings can make a big difference.

My housemates both get bad hayfever, so even flowers that I don't think will set them off get a lot of complaints. I have a couple of sets of very realistic stems of fakes - purchased from a very good quality florist in my hometown here in Australia at around $18 per stem. Obviously I would prefer to have new, fresh flowers on a regular basis. We have lots of real indoor plants as well, but the flowers have the delicacy and height that I'm looking for in some areas of the house without the complaints from the housemates.

I agree with everyone who said not to rush into buying new pieces just because your best friend is coming. Take your time to get it right. I think what you've got is looking great so far and your friend will be impressed, but definitely agree with adding your personal belongings.

I would add a throw rug or pillows to your bed, a small vase of flowers on the bedside table and a stack of nice books underneath. A plant or vase of flowers on the table next to the couch will also make a big difference. Maybe you have some small statues other objects that you could put on the window ledge. Apart from a plant/flowers you probably already own things that will add interest and give your space a much more homely feel.

Based on the mix of furniture in the room, it's a bit hard to tell what your style is. What is tranquil to you? Do you prefer neutrals or something more colourful? Perhaps you could take some colour cues from the Persian rug that you have decided to find.

I agree with rearranging the furniture, particularly the bed. Then I'd focus on the bedding and getting more substantial lighting. Mixing colours/shades/patterns and textures in your bedding (including throw cushions and rugs) will not only be comfortable and relaxing, but will be more interesting visually.

I like what I can see of the plate on top of the chest, but that area is very bare. Maybe add a couple of other personal objects. A mirror hung above is also a good idea or even a large framed artwork/poster leaning against the wall (if you don't want to touch the walls).

Before you do anything, work out what is relaxing to you. The room mainly just needs your personality.

I'd paint the trim white to match the other rooms in the house, but keep the ceiling as is. Because the trim is different to other rooms in the house (judging by the photos) it makes the amount of wood stand out, whereas the ceiling could become a nice feature on its own.

Also, as the walls, floor and couches are all a similar colour, I would consider painting the walls a different colour - perhaps a pale blue or even white/cream. Maybe see how it looks after painting the trim white - if you decide to do that. That might be enough to give it a nice lift.

Otherwise, as some others have said, maybe focus on adding more colourful pieces to the room to break up all the grey. I don't think the carpet was a bad decision and if you do keep the ceiling as is, it would be hard to match wood flooring with it. I would keep both as they are.
