And will I be able to get it in Canada?

Hmm--I was all excited to check out your suggestions (thanks!) but it seems that none of them are available in Canada.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Thanks for this. I want to make beef stew soon, but I don't cook with alcohol for a couple reasons. Tried it once with broth, and it just wasn't great. Thinking maybe we'll try some pom juice & see how that works out.

I married a man who appreciates a good plate of food when it's put in front of him, and he likes when i cook most of the time, but he also enjoys going to a nice restaurant--though Subway and Tim Horton's work just fine for him too (much to my dismay when we make it to the city for a day, as it's often late for dinner when we arrive and almost every time, he says, "How about we just go to the Timmy's down the street or look up the nearest Subway?"). My frustrations lie in meal-planning, when I ask, "Anything sound good for supper tonight?" and he just looks at me blankly. In his words, "I don't think about food like that." When he was on his own, he could eat a plateful of apples and cheese for at least two meals a day. (I know--it could've been so much worse.)

I was thinking rancid oil, too. I have several baking/pizza stones. My Pampered Chef are the best I've got, and one I bought for 50 cents from a garage sale took a long time to season properly. My understanding has always been that it's best to bake something buttery (Pampered Chef always recommended those buttery Grands biscuits, I think) or similarly oily, as the stone is porous and absorbs the oil, which is what seasons it & makes it nonstick. (It's actually not totally unlike cast iron.)

Last time I wandered into our local kitchen store, they had an Emile Henry salt pig on their clearance table. I assume the color was retired as there was nothing wrong with it, and since I've been lusting after a salt pig for years, I went ahead & bought it. It gets used ALL the time.

I have salt & pepper grinders (though I do occasionally find myself wondering why we have a salt grinder, as I also keep a large container of fine sea salt in the cupboard), but no shakers.

I make black bean enchiladas a lot when I want a meatless meal--although sometimes there are no beans in them. In the summer, I use grated zucchini, in the winter, sweet potato. Corn, tomatoes, shredded carrots, diced sweet peppers, diced onions. I never measure anymore--just fill my giant skillet. Spices: Paprika, cayenne, cumin. Sauce for on top: tomato sauce (I prefer stewed tomatoes) + cumin + cayenne + tomato paste. Cover with pepper jack or monterey jack.

Just about everyone I know has the old Tupperware spoons. I really like the 1 1/2 teaspoon measurement in the old sets, which they don't have in their new sets.

Love that your hubby was able to get you individual teaspoons--how thoughtful!

Sounds like you've got some great ideas already, but I thought I'd mention that the Modular Mate sale from Tupperware has just been extended to Jan 25th--my Modular Mates have helped my pantry like nothing else, because they work together so well, and they keep my pantry staples fresher than anything else I've tried. (I'm a Tupperware fan.) Plus, as cute as keeping stuff in glass jars is, the idea of one of those jars falling and breaking (earthquake, toddler, butter fingers, whatever) scares the bejeebers out of me. I hate broken glass.

Today I dug out the remnants of a bag of red hots and dissolved them in a couple quarts of hot apple juice. Sipping it right now. Mmmm. (And such a pretty red.)

You mean the plastic containers you get from Walmart and stuff, right--not actual Tupperware? I keep most of my Tupperware and other plastic containers in one big drawer, nesting when possible and keeping the lids against the front of the door, close to their bowls. With a 2yo about, that's not always easy, but it mostly works. I also try to purge twice a year and get rid of anything without a matching lid.

And if the missing or damaged piece is Tupperware (the brand) consider contacting your friendly neighborhood consultant--broken Tupperware will be covered by the lifetime warranty, and a lot of the seals (lids) are still available to buy, even if what you're missing is the seal from your grandma's sugar canister.

I tend to buy in bulk when possible, so I'll forgo style for capacity. I have two sets of Tupperware canisters (one old orange set and one new white set with red lids), and a super-big one (green, from last year) that stays in the pantry.

I first had penne alla vodka at Carmine's in New York. I immediately looked up a recipe or two upon arriving home. I've tried quite a few, but my favorite is one that, as the post-er warned it would, has kept me from ordering it anywhere else because I just don't think many restaurants could top the recipe. Instead of prosciutto, it calls for mushrooms. I've always intended to add prosciutto too/instead, but haven't gotten around to it.

In the apartment we lived in before we bought a house, we had a hood with a duct; it was loud but worked wonders. In our house, we had a re-circulating hood (because, as with just about everything else the former residents installed or "improved," they took the cheap way out). When we had to buy a new fridge and switch the positioning of the stove to fit the new fridge, we decided not to bother with the hood. I haven't noticed a difference, so it really was useless. The only thing I miss is having the a light directly overhead. When we can renovate the kitchen a bit, I want to put the appliances back where they were when we moved in, and I want to install a range hood with a duct.

I like the story behind Warthers Cutlery in Dover, Ohio. The Warther Museum is well worth a visit if you're ever in the area. That man was a genius. The family's been in the knife business since 1902.
