Also, if you're inclined to use your fingers to push things onto the flat of the knife (or hold them there), you're more likely to cut your fingers if you're using the sharp side to scrape the board. Why You Shouldn't Scrape the Sharp Edge of Your Knife Over the Cutting Board Video |

Yeah, I've never lived close to a Trader Joe's that I was aware of. But these sound like a snack my husband and I would both love; I'll keep my eyes open for a similar product at a local store, but I'd love to see a recipe! How Can I Make Falafel Chips at Home?Recipe Questions |

Love my Tupperware containers, and they have a lifetime warranty, so if they break, you can get them replaced. (I actually have two sets of their canisters--old school canisters bought at a thrift store and new ones I ordered when I couldn't find the old ones after a move--but then I found the old ones. And I'm thrilled to have two sets.) My cats have been jumping on mine, too, the punks. Help Me Find Durable, Well-Sealed Flour & Sugar ContainersGood Questions |

I was just looking at this recipe in the book of family favorites my mom made us each as a nest-departing gift. While it was never a favorite of mine (I'm not a meringue fan unless it's on top of Grandma's lemon meringue pie), I've been thinking that I bet my hubby would love them. I've used mine as a trivet, but am a little wary of doing so after an encounter with a crockpot warped it. (Stupid thoughtless me.) I'm sure it was just the continuous heat, but I was lucky that it flattened out again afterward. Could a Wooden Cutting Board Be Used as a Trivet?Product & Shopping Questions |

Ha. We removed the light fixture over our table shortly after we moved in. The people who designed the kitchen put a florescent light over the table. Grr. We're not fans of florescent. And then, to make matters worse, the previous light fixture wasn't in the middle of the dinning room, so they cut a hole in the cedar paneling of the ceiling (which is very pretty) and ran wires underneath it from the original box with all the wires. Their florescent light covered both holes nicely. :( The "Right" Height for Dining Room Lighting |

Grew up in Ohio calling it "pop" but then my sister moved to North Carolina and for some reason I now tend to call it "soda," even though I live in British Columbia, where it's called "pop." In fact, my husband and I were on a new ferry and he said the interior was done by Americans; I asked how he knew and he pointed to the words stenciled around the upper border in the cafe--it said "soda." As chlauraphyll noted, it makes a great ointment for diaper rash and is safe for cloth diapers. I hadn't ever noticed coconut oil on the shelf before I started cloth diapering, but now I have a big jar of it in the cupboard, with some of it scooped into a container in my diaper bag. Haven't used it much for cooking, but I'm looking forward to doing so! Pantry Staples: Trader Joe's Organic Coconut Oil |

When this house's previous owners decided to add on to the house, they added a dining room to the kitchen, which is great. But they put in flourescent lighting and made it so we have to replace parts of the paneled ceiling if we want to install a light fixture centered over our table, because they cut holes in the paneling instead of doing the wiring properly. Also, they failed to put a window in the only south-facing wall; there is a door, but that doesn't do anything for my seedlings in the spring. (This year I'm winter sowing and putting it all outside early to see if that works for me.) What Light Sources Do You Have In Your Kitchen? |

I have a glasstop stove, which I was excited about when we moved into the house, but it took all of about three months to become disenchanted with it. It really sucks for making jams & jellies, as my husband tends to let things boil over. I'm hoping when this stove (a Kenmore) kicks it, we'll be in a position to consider gas. I like the glasstop better than the usual coils, though. Looking for Best Electric Stove Recommendations Good Questions |

pearmelon--Knives are harder to use when they're dull, more likely to slip where you expect them to slice, cutting you instead of your fruit or veggie. I was discussing this one day with the home ec teacher in the school where I taught--I'd run down to her classroom to use one of their knives to cut something for my breakfast, and I'd been appalled to discover how dull their knives were. "Yeah," she said. "I feel like a hypocrite because I tell them it's more dangerous to use dull knives, but the board doesn't let them use sharp knives." How To Cope With Your Parents' Dull Knives |
