Having lived in a bunch of older buildings, for me the A #1 thing to look at is windows. Make sure they open, close, lock, that the glass isn't broken, or other anomalies and make sure they all have screens that are in good shape. I used to get boxes from Borders or Staples until I discovered that several alleys in the city I live in (Ann Arbor, MI) had huge recycling bins filled with collapsed cardboard boxes next to the dumpsters. I thought if you were on a sub-lease the people you were subletting from were responsible if you flaked out. In that case, I don't know why the landlord would bother with a credit check.
