I love having magazines. Online resources are great, but I find that the ideas I encounter there get forgotten quickly. It's far easier to pour over pictures in your hand than on a screen. I keep my magazines for a time, then tear out ideas that particularly move me, creating my own magazine in a sense. Then I revisit the idea notebook and take things out, replace them with new ideas.

I like Do it Yourself Magazine the best right now. Lots of great ideas for using on-hand and upcycled materials. Always an enjoyable read and holds up to multiple viewings. I've also recently picked up "My Home My Style" which is a small, ad-less publication.

I think AT's next book should be on outdoor spaces!

Go ahead and use the Krylon for plastics. I've used it for a bistro (resin) set I had that sat outside all summer long for about three years and it's only now starting to chip.

By the time it chips up on you, you'll be ready to change the color anyway.

I LOVE my heated mattress pad and I've declared it a necessity. But I live in Chicago and if I lived in California, I don't imagine it ever getting cold enough for me to use it there. (Especially with someone else sleeping in the bed.)

What's lovely about it is I can turn the furnace down to 60 at night and be perfectly toasty and I'm not running the furnace all night long.

If it ever gets too hot, you can turn down the setting, or just turn it off altogether. It only stays on for 10 hours at a time, so if I remember to warm it up before bedtime, it shuts off in the wee hours anyway.

Also a necessity: a pet :-)

When I saw the rust spot on the "coffee table" i saw orange - I think a cool retro shade would be really fun. The picture makes the room seem a little cool and gray, it needs some sun.

I agree that text-as-decorating has probably seen its day. This is my home, not a retail store telling me what's for sale in this room. And the last thing I need to see when I'm in a crappy mood is a sign commanding me to "Laugh."

Mid-century is probably here for a little while longer though, especially thanks to Mad Men. It won't take long for the real classic pieces to be chosen as timeless and we'll be on to the next neo-movement. (Does anyone ever wonder if/when we'll revisit 80's pastel?).

On a recent episode of "Mad Men", Betty Draper's housekeeper suggests that she ought to put the dirty dishes into the basement so Betty can go to bed after putting on a big dinner party. I thought: what a great idea! (Now if only I had a basement to put them in...)

With all of this scary economy stuff going on lately, I was JUST thinking about the glut of mcmansions and wondering if it ever came to it, would they divied those houses like they did in the depression. (I live in one of those turn of the century split-up homes now.)

I'm not sure if it would be impossible to divide up those mcmansions, though. Probably the biggest issue would be to get the municipalities to go along with the idea. But if it was a matter of necessity, it could be done.

Put me down for cilantro aversion. It tastes like something you're not actually supposed to eat. I can't even stand to smell it in the grocery store.

I love fennel, the root and the spice, even though I really loathe licorice! I've never associated the flavor of fennel with it.

I've had a little accent lamp on the back of the toilet forever. The only time I ever use the overhead light in the bathroom is when I clean (to be fair, I'm lucky enough to have two big casement windows that go all the way to the floor in the room).

I leave it on in the evenings and cloudy days. It's very cozy and gives off more light than a candle.

I love sticking things in my garden. It's totally possible to overdo it, but I love the interest and surprise that it gives the garden. This year I picked up a couple of colorful ceramic mushroom stakes at Gethsemane Gardens. I've got them along the walk way.

My containers have stake-type things in the centers and I think it gives the flowers something to reach for.

This is what's always been known in my family as the "Ravinia Table".

A couple of us have them and we put them together for one large table to spread the feast out on.

I like the idea, not crazy about the designs they offer, though.

Art,

Krylon has a spray paint called "Fusion" that is specifically for plastics.

I just painted my bistro table/chairs and all of my plastic flower pots with it. It's really brightened up my porch.

I tried the textured paints on a pot one year and it just did not hold up. It ended up looking kinda trashy.
