Wow. So... nothing nice at all to say about anyone at all? Amazingly obnoxious.

Not unless it's a themed kids' room. SO kitschy.

Yes, why not give a toddler something hard with corners to zoom around on. A dreadful case of form over function if you ask me.

The Pushkin Museum is not to be missed, some pretty terrific exhibitions happen there http://www.arts-museum.ru/index.php?lang=en

There are Art Lebedev's ventures which have designy tchotchkes (on the kitschy side, but popular) and boast home-like food and very good coffee http://store.artlebedev.com/offline/

There's Gorky Park (nice website, but only in Russian http://park-gorkogo.com/) - a recently lovelified hang-out spot with all sorts of entertainment on a regular basis, including yoga, sports, and stuff for kids (and the paths are turned into a skating rink in winter!).

By the same token, the Garage Contemporary Culture Center (located within Gorky Park) has interesting exhibitions and events: http://garageccc.com/en

Flacon Design Factory (website only in Russian too, I believe http://flacon.ru/) offers coworking space and is otherwise similare to Garage and Strelka. Another new coworking venture is called Clockface, they have several cosy locations, there's wi-fi, coffee etc., and you pay per minute: http://www.clockfacer.ru/ (needless to say, Russian website, Google Translate the heck out of it).

Everyone's raving about cosy Moomin Cafe http://mumicafe.ru/ ("creative cafe" offering workshops and activities for kids and adults alike), stylish Bontempi http://www.bontempirest.ru/ (manageable prices, nice atmosphere), John Donne pub http://www.john-donne.ru/.

My personal favorite is Ludi Kak Ludi (metro Solyanka) http://ludikakludi.ru/en/, and other places can be found by running placeplaceplace.ru through GTranslate... Among the grungier places where the young, the liberal, and the intellectual gather: Chinese Pilot Jao Da (http://msk.jao-da.ru/), Bilingua (http://www.bilinguaclub.ru/), Jan Jacques (http://jan-jak.com/). To be kosher in style, go to Tel Aviv (the one on Tsvetnoy Bulvar, not the one by the Mediterranean http://www.telavivbar.ru/)

Argh, there's just so much stuff:) Moscow can be atrocious in many ways, but the grand scale of the bad is no less grand with the good. Still - beware of policemen.

Just to add another vote: the play-off system seemed more fair, and so was the limited time of favoriting each new batch of entries. Last year had its share of unfair (e.g. AT-picked highlights from the pool of entrants, which mostly ended up placing on top), but this time borders on arbitrary.

Love love love your place! Both the design and what you had to work with in terms of the space itself. It's the feeling we're going for at home. Regrettably, we're not there just yet, and budget constraints are one of the main reasons. What are you using to hang up the bike? We have two and not much room to store them.

When it starts to dictate its own rules. Example: if you have a small tasteful collection, you can display it in accordance with the style of your home. If you have a huge c-r-a-z-y collection, it will require special shelving, showcases, or its own room. And so on.

Laurie— in my view, it is perfectly reasonable to lay out your expectations before your sister moves in. She is entitled to know in advance, otherwise you can't expect her to comply. And your sister may not be like that, but some of us feel less than comfortable when someone is being as generous as you, so it would help to know that there are requirements and not just giving with nothing in return.

When my husband and I lived with my parents, they refused to let us share in the expenses, saying their bills hadn't increased all that much since we moved in. We were students and weren't making that much, but we insisted on just contributing a certain sum of money for my parents to use at their discretion (towards bills, or food, or gas, or anything). We also brought groceries home when we could.

In 2005, I was 19 and working in an art magazine, that's how I first heard of Jeanne Claude and Christo. The Gates is probably something I will remember for a long time even though I wasn't there. Thanks for putting me in mind of that!

Well done! No idea why everyone is obliged to have a sofa. And as for TeamDecor's comment, well, projection has never, to my knowledge, benefited anyone, so its best to ignore this kind of unwarranted hostility.

Now there's a person I'd like to meet! The apartment -- not my thing, but I appreciate how cohesive and true to itself (and apparently, the dark embers of Steve's soul) it is. Thumbs up!

I used to be a carnivore, while my husband was vegetarian. He's the one who cooks. Fortunately, he could bring himself to cook me meat. I respected his choices and tried never to offer a bite of my meal if it was meat, he respected my need for this kind of protein.

Now that I've chosen to become vegetarian as well, we love hosting people, but we always warn them that we don't cook meat and ask whether there is something they won't have in their meal. Anyone is invited to bring their own dishes (why would we be hurt?), but we make sure to cook a tasty and hearty meal without meat. When we go visit, we warn the hosts politely or just make do with the sides.

I find comments like Stylefyle and ShermelS's a bit off-putting. Why can't people choose what they allow as food in their house or not? And while I realize that being a vego is my choice, why shouldn't it be respected just like other choices, i.e., religion (like kosher and halal food)?

Cool. Must point out though that the clear case seems quite uncomfortable: as a quick reader, I turn pages a few times a minute, and this seems to make the book into an immobile stand for a coffee mug.

While it doesn't appeal to me visually, I admire the work and thought than went into it, and of course, the non-traditional use of materials and the low price.

That said, I am aghast at what is considered cheap in the U.S., as $3500 is about a quarter of what we spent on our entire apartment (which is small, but still), and that was entirely gutted too. Come live in Lithuania, everyone:)
