What about a long upholstered (cleanable) bench just shorter than the length of the wall? I don't think tables are necessary.

You could also try the bowls-of-baking-soda trick. I believe vinegar works too.

Before I knew better, two years ago, we left a full chicken carcass in our attached garage trashcan for an entire week in August while we cruised Alaska. My car and house smelled like death for weeks, and our windowsills were lined with dead flies trapped between panes.

What about something from nature, like a birch branch hung horizontally above the TV?

I found five baskets at Ikea that were just a bit smaller than the distance between the cabinet tops and the ceiling, and almost exactly fit across the entire length of the cabinets. I store lesser-used kitchen things in these (fondue pot, Christmas baking supplies, margarita glasses in winter, springform cheesecake pan, etc.) instead of having everything out looking cluttered. I just pull out a chair to get anything down from up there.

This is just a random usability request, but I really wish that when I clicked one of the four photos, it would link to the actual story and not the summary article itself. Just a suggestion!
