I think floor to ceiling curtains are a great way to separate the sleeping area. You can put them on a track attached to the ceiling. I have a studio but it's too small and awkward to do this, so I have my bed against the wall. Also, area rugs are a great way to visually separate areas. I bought a great CB2 sectional secondhand. It's great for lounging with a roommate - you each get your own couch. However, it really limits the way we can re-arrange the room. I don't know what your style is, but my idea is to make a slip cover with folds to go over it, and top it off with a piece of glass. This way you could still access the shelf below.
