I'm just using an ancient cell phone as my alarm clock... I'd love this so much!

A sleeping porch sounds like bliss. Yes please!

Another vote for getting rid of the boxspring! Personally I find them very uncomfortable, as well as ugly and unnecessary. It's better for the mattress to rest directly on a slatted base, allowing air circulation. Most Europeans probably wouldn't have a clue what a boxspring even is. And in the UK, an old fashioned divan bed is essentially a boxspring on legs, with a a mattress on top. It's much more common now to have a mattress on a slatted platform base. But I think the idea of a bed base, plus a boxspring, plus a mattress (plus potential extra layers of featherbed) is peculiarly American!

One summer in college I was visiting a friend in Atlanta. We were bored one day and decided to make papier mache fish by covering balloons. (As you do.) Mine turned out pretty cool, and I wanted to take it home with me to the UK. But I forgot to pop the balloon before boarding the flight... so somewhere across the Atlantic an enormous bang was heard, originating from the general area of my feet. Everyone around me jumped and stared, and I was so embarrassed showing the flight crew my plastic bag full of exploded pieces of balloon fish.

That was in 1992. I hate to think what would have happened if I did that now...

But I do love the wood wall idea. It's beautiful with the rustic natural texture and color variation. Thanks!

I totally agree! All this 'Royal we' is torture to read, especially with the mangled grammar.

AT is fantastic, with great posts and comments. But I don't understand why this is even an issue. Why can't a collective blog have multiple individual voices? Your posts are already identified by name. And you can still use "we" when it's appropriate, expressing something that really does apply to all of you as a collective group.

For example, maybe.... "We've paid attention to all your comments on this issue and are going to fix it!"

In the UK, Dylon make a dye specifically for machines. I've used it many many times with great results. The dye powder goes in the machine first, then salt and last the clean damp items to be dyed. It's especially important to wash any new fabric first, to remove any manufacturing residue (or something like that..) Colours mix, so blue dye will turn red fabric purple, etc. I've also mixed different coloured powders together for more colour variety. And to get as much out of every pack as possible, i deliberately add an extra item or two to the wash cycle that immediately follows the dying. (It's supposed to rinse away all the remaining dye, but I like to use it to alter the colours of the added stuff just a little.) After that, I usually do a dark wash first just to absolutely sure nothing untoward happens. I've never had any problems, just a lot of fun experimenting!
