My youngest (also have a 17yo) is 19 months and is still wearing the 2 dozen AIO diapers I purchased on ebay prior to his birth. They cost me $132, incl shipping. I did purchase some cloth tri-folds to use with them because his legs are skinny - which allows the pee to dribble out before the fleece can absorb- and his skin dries out quickly when next to microfleece. The trifold liners cost about $7/half-dozen. I sewed a couple dozen flannel wipes when I was pregnant and nesting, but we honestly prefer the cheap washclothes I later purchased for "poopy" diaper use. So, I guess I have two pointers: 1. you don't need to spend a fortune on good cloth diapers and 2. cheap washclothes make GREAT wipes :-)

Best of luck!

We primarily shop at Publix, Trader Joe's, and a huge non-chain market that calls itself a "farmer's market." The latter has almost everything our family could want...lots of organic veggies, grains, legumes, dairy items, etc. as well as specialty foods such as fresh salsas and imported olives. For meat, I try to rely on buying from a local humane ranch that attends real farmer's markets in the area, but do buy some from each of the places I go. Convenience sometimes wins *heh* We mostly buy prepared foods from TJ's these days. My toddler loves their organic crackers and their organic cheese sticks and I think their organic jams and organic frozen veggies are the best :-)

@MRSBERG - I must be missing something. Why would you care if other consenting adults are "sexually perverse" with each other?

@OP - I think the pics are beautiful. I had not seen them prior to your post. Interesting project!

I have Amazon ship Pacific's organic cream of mushroom and organic cream of celery soups quarterly. While I usually cook from scratch, I find these cream ofs very convenient for prepping slow cooker meals to be eaten on nights that I have class until 9p. My family really loves some of the comfort foods they produce, such as chicken and dumplings and a simplified version of chicken and veggie curry (served over Basmati). I've actually enjoyed figuring out what beloved classics can be made more quickly and easily using these soups. I understand the reluctance of some to either use or eat these handy shortcuts, but I'd rather my family had a hot, almost homemade meal on a busy night than fast food *bleh*

Did you see the post where a family in similarly small digs turned their dinette into a nursery? If you have a dining space, it might be best used as a spot for the wee ones: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/turning-a-dinette-into-a-nursette-166975?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+apartmenttherapy%2Fohdeedoh+%28AT+Channel%3A+Family%29&utm_content=Google+Reader

Good Questions

Have you ever noticed that some folks who have -chosen- to not watch tv have no problem telling others what they should do? This occurs not just on blogs, but w/i families and circles of friends.

Many things in our lives have both a good and a bad side, each requiring balance. Families have to find that point for themselves.

If you want to discuss unhealthy inputs for our children, who don't we chat about how the American public school system is failing them? Are you ready to judge the families who send their children for 6-9 hours per day, 5 days per week anyway? I'm certainly not.

I had a Sophie when I was a baby and I am both American and 40 years old. So, somebody was importing this teether loooong before 2006. Now, my son has one and while he does not play with her much now, he certainly chompled on her a lot when his front teeth were coming in!

As for the Amazon reviews, I read those too. I understand the concerns about the length of Sophie's legs but our family decided she would be a supervised toy rather than writing her off completely. Millions of this toy must have been sold and yet I've not read of one death due to it. Has anyone else?

My now-16-year-old grew up with this book and his copy is a bit worse for wear. Many lovely hours were spent reading to him when he was little...

I just purchased another copy for my second son who will turn one in two days. I'm quite sure he will enjoy it every bit as much as his older brother did!

I use something similar. Among the gift baskets sent when my second son was born was a box of delicious Harry and David pears *yum* After the pears were consumed, the useful divided compartment box was headed for the recycling bin....until I realized it was perfect for baby socks, hats, bibs, etc.

Free and environmentally beneficial for the win!

Graham crackers, actually. They are easier for little hands to deal with and really easy for big hands to shape with a sharp knife. I do mix up a batch of homemade butter cream icing, however.

This year, we decorated our wee houses with spiced drops, Skittles, Mike-and-Ikes, and mini candy canes. Much fun was had!

*le sigh* I miss the Italian Market. Since moving to an Atlanta suburb earlier this year, I've made sure to visit the Italian Market during each Philly visit. There's no place like it. Sure, DiBruno's has gotten more expensive over the years but the foods they offer are not staples in most homes...they are treats.

My 9th Street area recommendations:

*DiBruno's for cheese, olives, oils, and vinegars

*Sarcone's for heavenly breads, Italian cookies, and the BEST breadcrumbs

*Anthony's for a mocha and the only canolli I'll eat

*Talluto's for delicious pasta that is either cut-to-order for freshness or frozen for convenience

*The Spice Corner for their house blend and small-scale spice shopping (I prefer Penzey's)

*Fante's for reliable knife sharpening, specialty kitchen gadgets, and Wilton baking supplies

Of course, it wouldn't be a trip to "the market" without a delicious cheese pie (pizza) at Lorenzo's. Mmmmm...

I'm hungry now :-(

Like Anusha, I agree with katethegreat and tmoore.

The author's diatribe about Jolie's and Madonna's adoptions is ugly and rather presumptuous. How can anyone outside of their circles *really* know their motivations?

My son was born over 15 years ago and we chose to CD, make baby food, breastfeed, co-sleep. We did these things both because it seemed best for HIM and because I stayed home to parent which left us with an annual income of about 23K. These practices are not new. Families have been employing them for, like, ever. Food from a jar, "milk" from a canister, diapers made from plastic? These items are new.

I'll be birthing my second son next month and we plan to go the same route in baby care. Somehow I'll manage to not feel enslaved by my own choices ~snort~

AcrossThePond: My family has been using soap nuts for a few months now and we're very happy with them. They do not take care of seriously smelly items--such as mildewed washcloths--by themselves so I keep a bucket of vinegar water in the laundry room for soaking. That batch gets washed about once per week. If I'm washing a load that includes my son's icky socks, I throw in about 1/2 cup of Borax. Most loads only use the soap nuts, however.

My Tribe loves games. While we do not have a regular game night, several of us do host them throughout the year. Favorites seem to be Apples to Apples, Fluxx, Hoopla, and Settlers of Catan.

Some of us meet twice monthly to play Dungeons and Dragons and many of us cooperatively play video games. DDR parties are lots of fun too!

Apartment Therapy Chicago | Good Questions: Fitted or Unfitted Kitchen?

As was suggested above, I would look for cast-off cabinets. Who knows, you might find enough for the entire kitchen. I'm not sure if this limited diagram helps, but if you were facing the wall in question, my design would look like this:

ceiling
---------------------------------------------------------
Upper cabinets to ceiling or not

---------------------------------------------------------
Open Shelving
Refrig ------------------------------------------
Open Shelving
------------------------------------------

Refrig Long stretch of counter (also for desk top)
-------------------------------------------

Base cabinet(s) Under-Desk Area

floor

You could buy a comfy counter-height stool to use as a desk seat. It would also be a great a place to plop when you want to peruse cookbooks or chop veggies or even eat a quick snack. Good luck!

I like this apartment. It feels welcoming and there are things to catch your eye w/ it being too busy. I'm partial to a mix of rich reds, deep grays, and warm whites :-)

Question: Do you find that sofa-bed (from IKEA, right?) comfortable for just lounging around? I have considered buying 5 or 6 of them instead of an extra-large sectional for my attic space. The seating has to be comfy for movies, music and conversation. These units would have the added benefits of fitting up the turned stairway (lol) and being able to be turned into beds for guests.
