I almost always buy something off of the registry but do it with a little spin. I learned how to hand-embroider a few years ago and try to buy a set of their table or bed linens and then make it a keepsake.

I hand-embroidered a set of sheets for one couple, a set of napkins for another and my most favorite project was a beautiful 60x120 linen tablecloth with 10 napkins for a close friend from high school. Each project reflected the couples' style whether it was tradtitional or modern.

I did go a little rogue on the tablecloth because they registered for what could have passed as a set of your grandmother's curtains!

If they are a family of four living in a basement apartment, I would think they have bigger problems than a friendly family living above them. Tell them to stop harrassing you and move on.

You could always give your kids tap shoes and then the fun would really start!

if you have an entire cupboard full of ashtrays, you have bigger problems than whether or not people like your chalkboard cabinet paint.

I got this recipe from NYTimes (I think) or maybe Chowhound: brown some butter in a pan, add shredded beets and a tablespoon of balsamic. Cover and turn off heat. Cook pasta, drain and add to beets with fresh mint and toasted poppyseeds (okay and maybe some parmesan). You won't be disappointed!

If you can't (or don't want to) switch the bedroom and living areas, I think you should keep the color on the living room side of the partition somewhat bright. A red might be too dark and since the area is already shadowed by the partition, you wouldn't want it to feel like a den! I only have one window in my living room and I'm really glad I didn't choose the dove gray because the whole room would have looked drab. Instead I chose a really warm peachy cream color (Behr Lilting Laughter to be exact).

Whatever color you choose, something that accentuates and coordinates the partition would look great in the backsplash. Let's say you did the partition a sky or muted Tiffany blue, a primary yellow might look great in the kitchen! My kitchen is a celery green color and everyone gives me compliments when they see it.

Good luck!

jdens is right. Elegant doesn't have to mean complicated! I've recently started making a DELICIOUS root vegetable casserole with rosemary buttermilk biscuit topping from epicurious.com. It's always a hit, looks impressive (especially in a beautiful baking dish) and can be made ahead of time. It even satisifies the most adamant of meat eaters. Any dessert on a cake pedestal looks striking when you dress up the plate.

Here's an idea, too. What if you incorporated the gift exchange into the craft? People could pick names before and then craft for whomever's name they pulled? Make your own ornaments (ornaments, glue, glitter and imagination) would be a nice takeaway and doesn't require step-by-step instructions.

Keep the wine (or wassail or whatever) flowing, the music playing and enjoy your company! No matter what you serve or what activity you provide, it will be a holiday to remember and one that everyone will surely appreciate.
