I just want to say thank you for this post, because I am considering renovating my bathroom to look just like yours but am stuck on whether to get mosaic tile on the floor or bigger gray porcelain tiles, for easier cleaning. I still am not sure of what I'll do, but sounds like mosaic tile with a dark grout might be a good compromise?

I think AT did do a how-to on how to hack them for us non-sewers--I believe it involved hot-gluing fabric onto an existing Target roman shade?

Which I may have to do, because I cannot sew, and I covet toile Roman shades just like these, but every store I've gone to charges hundreds of dollars for the prints I like. Pout.

Yes, great reno. I'm curious—does anyone LIKE their tub doors? I want to get rid of mine, because I find they are so impossible to keep clean (especially the rusty/dusty bits along the bottom track) but I do kind of like their retro look. (My doors are plain glass, not frosted or anything, so they're not as tacky-looking as others I've seen...)

Thanks for the note, Bohemiangirl. I am leaning towards slate or something else for that reason (much as I love the hex tile look, I am a lousy housekeeper).

Yes, I keep hair elastics, bobby pins, and tweezers in one, and a little candle in the other. Rather handy, actually.

I TOTALLY want the grown-up girly bath--and since I am a single homeowner, I can have it too! It will have pink walls, possibly hex tiles on the floor, white subway tile on the walls, and black accents (like the black and white floral fleur de lis switchplate I have). Now, I just need to suck it up and start planning...

Appreciate the thoughts, Misty. Definitely don't want the green/brown tones. Didn't think I wanted veining, but will check out the soapstone.

Related question: I have a very small NYC bathroom that I'm looking to renovate. Thinking white subway tile up most of the walls, and then pale-pink-painted walls above that. Is doing a dark gray slate tile on the floor too dark for a tiny bathroom, or will the white/pale pink keep it from being so? (Was also thinking of small black and white mosaic tiles on the floor, to give it a more retro feel--I will already be decorating with black towels and such to make it feel a little vintage-y--but those are hard to keep clean, yes? I am not the best housekeeper...)

I have seen apartments in this building...I generally found them overpriced for the space and location.

That said, as someone who now lives in Gramercy and rarely cooks, I have to defend them for eating out all the time. Eating out in NYC doesn't mean plunking down cash for a full sit-down dinner every night. There are a million little delis and takeout places on every corner. I often pick up a little soup, salad, pizza, banh mi, whatever for just a few dollars a night. It really doesn't have to be that expensive.

p.s. JH4285, I've been loving the arc lamp lately for some reason (never was really a fan heretofore). For what it's worth.

Thanks everyone for the tips and the woos--each and every one of them is helpful, both to my situation and to my self-esteem! (I am smiling and blushing over here!) I didn't expect such enthusiastic and yet practical responses. They are much appreciated.

Sciencegeek, I have a ton of those felt doohickeys that go under furniture. Somehow I think I would need about 80 tons to muffle that big headboard, but it is worth a shot.

Guido, we did wedge a pillow in there once and it worked fairly well. Need to be less lazy about doing so.

JH4285, my partner-in-crime (heh) mentioned those caster cups and thanks to you I'll be running out to buy them. My bed is indeed on wheels.

Patrick, though I would love to mount my headboard (again, no pun intended), I admit I am both too lazy and too carpentry-challenged to attempt it. Maybe if the noise gets bad enough (or the neighbors start to complain...).

Said partner-in-crime also realized that if we, uh, rotated so we are lying with the headboard at our side, the noise diminishes for the most part.

Please forgive the intimate nature of this question, but I figured if anyone could answer it, it would be you friendly folk...

I recently bought the West Elm Moroccan headboard and attached it to an old-school metal frame (my bedroom is very narrow and buying a wood frame would mean no way to walk around the bed). Loved it. Until, that is, I began dating someone, brought that someone home one night, and realized that the headboard bangs the heck out of the wall if you exert any kind of movement on the bed. Seriously, it sounds as if someone is banging the wall with a two-by-four. Lovely.

Is there anything I can do to silence the headboard short of removing it? It has cutouts in the wood, so I can't really pad the back, but I guess I could throw a blanket over it on those "special" nights? Anyone have any suggestions? It would be nice to actually use my bed for something other than sleeping. Thanks!

Yes, I'm biased because my apartment is painted similar colors, but I love this! Energetic yet soothing at the same time, if that makes sense.

On another note, I was at the W. 18th St. Bed Bath and Beyond yesterday looking for a Dyson Slim, and whaddya know--they're massively on sale, down to $325 or thereabouts from $465 or thereabouts!

I keep my jewelry (especially big colorful bangles) in a box on a table near my front door. It started as an accident--I placed a glass-top box on a nesting table in my living room just because it looked pretty, and wasn't sure what to put inside--but then I realized I'm always running out of the bedroom forgetting to put jewelry on. This way I grab a bracelet or a necklace and put it on right before I exit. Plus, all those bangles look pretty assembled in a box, too.

This isn't a rug comment, but a C&B comment--their acrylic throw seriously sheds, too. Which is a problem considering the whole purpose of the throw is that it covers you and your furniture. I have cream-colored strands all over my clothing. Grrr!
