Hubs had to go into work for half a day so I figured I'd trash the kitchen while he was gone. I made some brandied cherry jam (found a jar of brandied cherries when cleaning out the pantry), some almond joy butter for the food swap I'm going to tomorrow and a pot of vegetable beef soup which is now simmering on the wood stove. I've got to check out the crockpot polenta recipe - sounds right up my alley. What's Cooking This Weekend? Weekend of February 16-18, 2013 |

While I don't have too much of a problem in my kitchen (because we ripped it out to the studs and redid it), I really want to flip the hot and cold water handles. I always turn on the water with my left hand and hate the fact that I'm wasting heated water. I could just get over it but since I've hit the half century mark I've decided that I'm an old dog who can't learn new tricks (unless I really want to). On Being Left-Handed In a Tiny Kitchen |

35 years ago, when I was still in high school, I took some continuing ed cooking classes with my mom (who never learned to cook from her mom). The class was taught by a woman named Gloria Henry, a short, busy Caribbean woman who specialized in French food. She opened up the world of flavors to me and I will be eternally grateful. When I graduated from high school she gave me a 12" cast iron skillet which I use still and I think about her every time I pull it out. Who Is Your Cooking Role Model? |

I make a pot of oatmeal from rolled oats, milk, flax seed and fruit on Monday mornings while packing up lunch. I split it into serving sizes and we grab and go the rest of the week. It takes a little time one day but there's only one pot to wash and we have healthy breakfasts the rest of the week. Do We Really Need Quick Oatmeal? |

So far to go - a broken swing arm lamp, some art that my mother in law gave me that I've always disliked, some clothes and a broken bulletin board. I don't think I'll be pulling anything out. Liveblogging Day 2: Outbox It! Liveblogging the January Cure |

BEST EVER SUGAR COOKIES!!!! and that's no lie - the Kitchn's recipe is the best ever! Also, chocolate peppermint bark, skillet toffee, and nut and fruit chocolate bars. Every thing else is coming out of the freezer (stuff I froze in November so December could be dedicated to sweets). What's Cooking This Weekend? Weekend of December 15-16, 2012 |

I keep them in the fridge in a carton on the shelf, I get them from the "egg woman" down the road and I never had one go bad. And the price is swoon worthy - a dozen for 2 bucks! Logistics: Where Do You Keep Your Eggs? |

Every summer I take my crock pot, toaster oven, rice cooker, and coleman stove out to my covered deck and do almost all of my cooking out there. My husband has a name for my summer kitchen but it's kind of rude in a funny way, but it saves me from heating up my unairconditioned house. Since the gas and charcoal grills are nearby and we do most of our eating out there it saves the kitchen from being too much of a mess too. 10 Ways to Prepare Your Kitchen for Summer Cooking |

When the former owner moved out of our house we found all kinds of things. We found a wine cask and some classic old mason jars in the basement, a ton of old metal that we sold for scrap and got $100 and bought ourselves dinner, but the best thing was when we ripped out a wall and found the stamp from the saw mill - the wood for our house was milled in the '20s right on our property. I don't know but the foliage in the last picture is exactly the same (my friens's grandma calls it marijuana plant because that is what she thought it looked like). Maybe she called it meadow rue in error but the foliage is pretty distinctive. Queen Of The Prairie: Nature's Cotton Candy |

I grow this in my upstate NY garden, but I know it as meadow rue. It spreads like crazy and I actually have to pull it out when it threatens the peonies! It is really hardy and super easy to grow. Queen Of The Prairie: Nature's Cotton Candy |
