I decided I didn't want to spend money on a storage bed, so I put my mattress/box spring on risers, then disguised everything underneath by using two bed skirts from Bed Bath & Beyond. One goes over the box spring (like normal) and the other one goes over the bed frame so that it just skims the floor (I forgot what the drop length was, but I measured it out and made sure it would meet the floor perfectly). It looks great. The fabric is black velvet, so especially with a coverlet on the bed, you can't tell there are two bed skirts, plus the color gives the illusion the bed isn't quite so high and just floats off the ground. I believe in investing - even when it's a stretch. Right after I closed on my little studio apartment (my first home!), I went and bought a Louis Ghost chair. I cheaped out on the delivery and squeezed into a cab with my arms wrapped around it. My second, more major purchase two years later was a Saarinen table with white marble top - I love sitting at it each and every day, even though I was remarkably cash-poor for a few months.
