One time my husband and I did a major decluttering of the garage and house the day before a neighborhood garage sale. We had no desire to man a garage sale so we put a sign out saying that everything was free. We did take the time to organize everything so it wasn't just a big pile of stuff. By the end of the day only one thing was left.

Washing Tyvek in the washing machine makes it soft like fabric and maintains it's durability. My husband has used it to make ground covers and tarps for backpacking.

The one thing I hate about my own home is the bathroom can be seen from the living room. Unfortunately I still haven't gotten my children in the habit of closing the door every time leave the bathroom. (My youngest asks "But how will I know if anyone is in there when I need it?")

So... Atrium? Sure! Full view of the bathroom? No thanks!

I would not do a custom table around the column. I get frustrated if a large centerpiece makes it so I cannot see the other people at the table. Having the large column cutting off my view would hinder any social interaction.

abc123... With all due respect...while I understand you are judging based on the choices of your parents I would prefer that you do it based on your own personal choices. Is 1,200 sq feet for 6 more spacious than your present situation? They are living with significantly less sq feet per person than I am (200 v 400) and I applaud them for doing it so well. Especially after downsizing from a much larger space, it looks as if they did a wonderful job of letting go. It would be easy to hold on to things and try to squeeze them in.

I like much about the room.... the openness, the accent colors in the different pieces, and the architecture. While I understand having the furniture to the side to create a hallway, I would personally have made the walkway narrower so the furniture felt less shoved to one side.

Cherrypie71, buyer beware is extremely important with any home purchase and any history know about a house is valuable. That said, I grew up in a home that was once occupied by an old recluse who had 30 plus cats. He also died in the home. The house never had issues related to the old man or his cats in the 28 years my parents lived there. A tear down in one person's eyes can be a remodel to someone else.

There have been some pretty grand statements made based on the comments of a self-acknowledged minimalist. I had a neighbor in which the husband thought the wife "saved" too much... current magazines on the coffee table, toys (broken) that the kids still played with.

There is clearly anger and conflict so I agree with those that suggested counseling... for BOTH the husband and wife. Maybe there is some "fixing" that needs to take place on both sides.

I don't turn on the lights at three in the morning, want to stay as asleep as possible, so that one has gotten me before. It's not fun, even if it's also not life threatening, so I do ask that my husband remember me at night time. Otherwise I agree, it's not too terribly hard to look first, especially if I want him to look when he's aiming.

@That70sHeidi..

Just so I understand you, this is a place to spout your feelings... but only if they do not in anyway hint toward you know what. (wanted to make sure not to say that dirty dirty word that is so offensive -- which by the way had not been mentioned prior to your ranting)

By the way, I still use paper towels but was not offended by the question.

Like others... I too am a sucker for windows and those are glorious windows! I agree that architectural details can make a b-i-g difference but I think the owners need credit also. I would never have thought of or been brave enough to paint mostly white on white with a few very bold walls, but I think they look great. I would have liked to have seen more of the kitchen.

Thanks for the tour.

jyw,
I was under the impression you were call me The Comment Police thus trying to put me in my place. If you really want my answer it's as follows, if not I understand.

Saying something has a "bad vibe" or in the same vein a "good vibe" gives a feeling but not direction. I would equate it to someone being told in a job evaluation that they have a "bad attitude", which is highly discouraged. It does not give the employee anything concrete to work with. I have been guilty in the past of saying pat nice things about places but usually it's like telling someone their haircut looks nice. It might be nice to say the length really compliments your face, but they are not left wondering if you don't. On the other hand, if you tell them their haircut is horrible and don't expand they are left wondering what about it doesn't work in your eyes.

This is just my perspective and I will gladly admit I will never be a cut throat Donald Trump. But I also consider myself to be an honest person and upfront person.

mschatelaine,

I'm totally out of my element so please excuse my ignorance.. but... are you then also saying that any addition or renovation to update an older home is wrong? Isn't any change to the original structure of a home a form of bastardization? We see many updates on this site in which they are updating older structures and attempting to do so in a way that is respectful to the history. I have often read praise to how beautiful it looks. Have they done wrong? Are they attempting to be deceitful?

My gut feeling is putting something soft and colorful on the wall. Maybe an urban quilt wall hanging... http://amyahlstrom.com/quilts.html or something in the same vein. Something that hints toward the rustic, country environment but also acknowledges the modern aspects.

I personally believe the engineering is probably incredibly sound. I was not saying my fear is ration, but it is still a fear. Probably similar to someone afraid of spiders... they may truly believe they are not dangerous but they still can't hold one.

And again... very cool looking
