Sculptural? Yes. Any other pluses? No. My daily rinse away of sink gunk would take on a whole new dimension with this thing and use WAY more water to just wash it out than the half cup or so it takes to wash out my mini sized one now. Besides all the other comments above, the "housewife" in me cringes at the very sight of this.

Ouch! "Back in the day when organic was unheard of"? In the 90's? I was gardening organically in the 70's...and no, I am not from California. Point is, organic gardening has been around a long time and its methods are proven to yeild more and better food. Any well prepared garden is expensive and hard to do at first. As Anne (in Reno) said keep trying and give it time, it goes by quickly.

This sofa is gorgeous. Personally I'd do a soft warm grey like Benjamin Moores San Antonio grey, add plenty of white and a few blue accents. Very elegant.

Maybe a little late posting my "me-too" but still want to say thanks for this post. I love seeing the lovely creative ways others live with less.
I downsized to 560 sf last Jan. and am living alone for the first time ever. My biggest challenge? Not grabbing more "bargains" when I see them, but leaving them for someone else to score. Biggest blessings? No mortgage, low utilities, whole house top-to-bottom clean up in less time than the former kitchen used to take. Greatest satisfaction by far is my smaller footprint.

Love the squiggle idea and also the Sock Monkey ( actually like the monkey idea best). A book or something similar seems kinda lame. Photographing the "object" in our homes would be great fun since AT'ers are so creative. At any rate I love this idea!!!

How about four hours south of DC in rural VA? Hey, we got design out here...there is even a Target over in Roanoke!!!
Seriously, though, I have often wondered why Atlanta has no AT rep. I grew up there with dreams of becoming a designer and it is a city full of design gems. Come on Atlantans, someone step up to the plate.

Mrs. Mack you did a splendid job and thanks for the tip. I had heard this before but had forgotten it.
I have always been a fan of carnations (love the fragrance). Nice to see these ideas on how to make them the stars of the show.

When I tried to sign up at the beginning I hit a computer snag and wasn't able to get on the "official" page, but I cured anyway. Got so much done that I hadn't been able to find energy/inspiration to do without the Cure. Thanks to AT and everyone who participated and kept me going even if I was only lurking in the background. Come spring I'm going to tackle that painting chore I've been putting off.

No, no, LaurieLu it is "bare"....like him. Partly exposed, down to the essence... It speaks of being safe enough to be real: no need for cover or pretense. I LOVE IT!!

Sometimes we get caught up in color and forget about value.
As fabulissime pointed out, a dark chocolate would be more soothing, would make the dining room walls "dissapear" and give the appearance of more space. High contrast such as this dark red and a lighter tone like any of the three samples can prove jarring over time and be uncomfortable to live with, especially if you are looking at that area for long periods of time like you say you are doing. If you have a good bit of light in this area the darker colors will be much more soothing and peaceful.
BTW, I love, love, love the red....what is it?

My bedroom is tiny and has to double as my library, which is cool because being around books relaxes me, however, the ten foot closet on one wall has an 18 inch door in the very center and NO other access!! It is completely useless for storing clothes so I use it for seasonal clothing, coats and storage of things like my Christmas tree and suitcases. So where are my clothes? Hanging out in the open in a closet system I set up along the opposite wall. YUK! For someone who likes clean and no clutter this is so visually displeasing that I tense up everytime I go in there. I have the material to hang a curtain which will help some, but then it will block out all the natural light from the window.....sigh. Oh, well, at least it will be "Cure-clean" and tidy.

KTG, thanks for the input. I do like the elegant look. I also like the idea of "retro" ornaments. Perhaps I'll poke around the local thrift stores and see what I can find.
holland,
Michaels arts and crafts have a line of very bright orange, magenta, purple, teal and lime green decorations. (I loved them but thought they might be just a bit much with the silver.) Nice to know someone else likes the bright colors as well.

RE: silver tinsel trees.
I started life over last Jan....no kids, no spouse and all the Christmas ornaments have been divided up and given to the now grown progeny as seeds for their own collections. I found a wonderful little silver tinsel tree on sale at Target and snapped it up. Now the season is upon us and I am wondering how to decorate it? Im thinking of something simple: White satin bows tied to the ends of random branches, maybe? or bright colored satin ornaments all one shape?
I've had the "lifetime collection of random ornaments" trees. Now I'd like something elegant and put together.
Ideas?
Thanks

but how is it we can never get through a "Staircase" post without someone tossing out the "Safety Hazard" line?

Cause gorgeous stairs are so damned hard to navigate in a cast and back brace???????

I "contended" with my ex for years during our marriage about doing this with our old beyond-repair-hardwood-floors. When he finally reluctantly agreed he and I both loved them. They took a small, pokey old space up to near glam level, disguised the flaws and made the space feel bigger. He re-did them after I left and added a final coat of acrylic....fantastic!
Not the best choice, however, if you have dogs. Fur and toenails.........

I had a client in a small town in Appalachia who kept a pet Bantam rooster in her house. It never had been outside. She kept a kleenex in her pocket and "picked up" after him whenever and whereever he went. Believe it or not her house was clean as a whistle. The rooster was docile and would jump up in her lap when she sat down. Weirdest thing I ever saw.

I'm firmly in the group that doesn't care a bit what is in the can as long as it isn't icky preservatives etc.
Growing up in the south one could never be sure the orange colored pie on the table was pumpkin or sweet potato and frankly I had a hard time telling the difference myself until adulthood. As revolution9 said: enough whipped cream and pie is pie.
