I've been making this salad since I saw it in Martha's magazine -- I make it with a toasted sunflower seed dressing instead of peanut (our son's allergic):

I planted radish seeds for the first time this year -- a pretty, slender variety called d'avignon radish -- and they were ready to pull up in just a month! I made bread and butter radish pickles (a recipe from CHOW -- I ate them on toast with cream cheese, per a suggestion made here) and a cucumber and radish salad from a recipe on the back of the radish seed packet: http://wellfedeveryone.wordpress.com/2009/05/22/cucumber-and-radish-salad/

Both were outstanding!

I use an ice cream bucket, too! I put the lid over the top of the container without snapping it down and never have an odor (though put a lot of coffee grounds in there every day, which may help). I take it out to the composter every three days or so.

I agree with aneelee re: counter clutter. Our bar -- which is between the kitchen and the kitchen table -- is essential for letting light into the kitchen and opening up the kitchen to the rest of the (very, very small) house, but it's also where the laptop, junk mail, dirty dishes, broken toys, cold medicines, etc. inevitably pile up.

I'm building a raised bed according to the Sunset design this weekend! And hedging my bets a bit with Boston weather by setting out radishes, lettuce, and onions in containers.

Thank you for this!! My kids love slow-cooked pork -- I usually braise it with hard cider and onions -- and I'm sure they'd like this, too.

My family's all-time favorite pot roast is so easy, I've memorized it:

Caramelize 1 1/2 lb. sliced onions in a few tbsp. butter or oil in a large dutch oven over med-low heat. Transfer onions to a bowl and brown a well-seasoned 4-lb. chuck roast (don't mess around with rump or top round -- they're too dry) on all sides. Pour in 1 c. chicken or beef stock and a bottle of Newcastle beer, return onions to pot, throw in a few sprigs of thyme, bring to a a boil, then cover pot and put in oven at 275-300 for two hours or until done (flip it over every 45 minutes or so for even cooking). I shred the meat and stir it back into the sauce -- serve over noodles or mashed potatoes.

I made the soda bread with dried cherries & golden raisins posted here last week and it is incredible! Thank you! I made a few changes to make it egg- & dairy-free (just left the eggs out, subbed Earth Balance for butter, and used a combo of cider vinegar and soy milk for the buttermilk) and the recipe adapted beautifully.

Also made lentil soup with a leftover ham bone.

(both are here, if anyone wants recipes: http://wellfedeveryone.wordpress.com/)

I have one and use it for frying -- it works very well. You do have to keep an eye on it, though. Mine is a little scorched.

Green Cat: I clean mine in the dishwasher now, but before I had one I used to soak the screen in a sink full of soapy hot water for 20 minutes or so to release the grease.

Thank you for this! I just bought a pound of chorizo to make Mark Bittman's brown rice paella (from his new book, Food Matters, which is terrific!) -- I only need a little bit for Bittman's recipe, and now I know what to do with all the extra.

I love my kitchen aid, too, and use it constantly. The pasta rolling attachment is terrific, but I don't love the ice cream making attachment -- the bowl is huge and takes two full days in the freezer to get cold enough to use (and takes up a huge amount of space), and if it's a really hot day, the ice cream doesn't aerate all that well (since the top is open). That said, I still use the ice cream maker frequently, I just curse it often.

Brianna:

My son has a dairy allergy -- you can get a simple blood test (called a RAST test) that will tell you if you have a milk allergy and how that allergy breaks down re: the components of milk. Casein is one of those componants. The test gives you a score (<.35 to 100) that you can track over time to see if/how your sensitivity changes. My son's pediatrician ordered the RAST test -- perhaps your gp could do the same (to save you a trip to an allergist until you have some test results in hand).

Good luck!

In case any cinnamon roll lovers who have egg and/or dairy allergies (or kids that do, like mine) are sighing in self-pity over these two recipes, I recently found an outstanding egg-free cinnamon roll recipe on the Pioneer Woman's website that's easy to make dairy-free, too, without sacrificing taste.

Here's my adaptation:

I braise greens in cider, too. I like them with bacon, but caramelizing a sliced onion before adding the greens and cider is a fine substitute. I always add a splash of vinegar at the end, too.

I'm not a vegetarian, but do eat meatless a lot of the time. I really don't like the meat-substitutes. I'm more likely to use beans, lentils, or grains in place of meat -- for instance, I use a combo of bulgur and lentils in place of ground lamb in moussaka.

I made tortilla soup this week, too, just like Ana K., but mine has chicken (and I fry my tortillas, which is a bit of a production. Baking them is a good idea. I will try that next time -- thanks, Ana!). Here's my recipe:

Yes! We by a sparkling white wine from Portugal called vinho verde by the case. It's light, dry, 10.5 % alcohol, and about $5/bottle.
