I'm going to be the voice of dissent here and say that honestly I don't think beige carpet places can achieve the look that wood can. A place can look great w/ beige carpet but the exact same place will ALWAYS look better w/ wood. The look of my place is very important to me so hardwood is on my must-have list when apartment hunting.

I agree that this technique is only suited for large rooms, in truly tiny spaces it can just make the room smaller by creating spaces that are unusable (you can float the furniture but only enough to have a gap that is too small to walk through)

I actually sit on the bench all day, no cushion! Guess I'm weird, it has never bothered me. It's actually supposed to be a side table.

BrooklynRob the point you bring up is exactly why I have it, I didn't want a big office chair in my dining/living area, right now the office area blends in but that would not be the case with a different chair.

I definitely like the creative touch on the desk, but I think you could add a lot by covering the side, the wood color really sticks out.

Thanks Phaedrus! I think my space is definitely small, I guess how cool it is is up for debate!

Derek- not the most high-tech thing in the world but contains all of the technical elements that I use for my work as a graphic designer - a powerbook and a digital camera.

Agree that there are just fewer apartments that small in the midwest, especially occupied by people with the money/interest to be really into interior design. In new york even if you have a large decorating budget you are going to be in a place that small if you're buying, not the case here.

Also I imagine people are turned off by all the problems of the last contest.

Native Austinite here! Honestly I'm just waiting to go back, the Chicago winters are too tough for me.
