I've often thought a semi-detached house would be the ideal arrangement. Semi-detached is when there is a wall between the two houses but they share a roof. Each partner would have their own separate home but would be close. Autonomous and Committed: Living Apart Together |

How much does your packet of dry yeast weigh? Or how much in terms of spoon measurements? I'd like to try to make your recipe (and start a new family tradition) only here in New Zealand one buys dried yeast in a jar and the recipe specifies how much to use in spoon measurements. When you find a colour you like, paint it on a large piece of heavy paper. I use lining paper. To get a sheet of paper large enough you could join two or more lengths together. The more intense/bright/dark your colour the larger the sheet you need. Putting your paint sample on paper means you are able to move it round your room. Lining paper wins out over flimsier kinds because it is heavy enough to take the paint and won't tear. A large sample of the paint colour will give you a much better idea of what it will look like on the wall. Different parts of a room receive different amounts of light, so you need to be able to move your sample round. It's important to see how a paint colour will look in the corners. A small chip, or even A4-sized sample simply isn't the same. Also, some samples are difficult to cover successfully if you put them on the wall. Trust me! Yes! They're safe to use. Wash them in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse, dry carefully and you can start using them right away. Clean off any build-up of old polish - this often reveals more of the colour and grain - with a furniture cleanser sold for use on antique furniture. Then polish with beeswax furniture polish, not one containing silicone. I think you'll find you like the chest better. I think it's one of the most sumptuous apartments I've ever seen! Up until now I've never liked gray walls, but having seen this I'm converted! Gray seems to contribute to the overall silvery look. Fabulous! Terry & Lyndon's Pristine Palatial Parlor House Tour |

My new home had two-tone mustard-coloured carpet throughout. When I first moved in, I thought it was hideous but couldn't afford to change it. I painted the walls to match the lighter of the two tones of yellow and gradually became reconciled to the carpet. I figured, at least it's a warm, welcoming colour. It also doesn't show spots and spills - and you guessed it, it's still here! But it is going to be changed in the next 12 months. Setting Up Home: Making Inherited Designs Look Deliberate |

I used to watch my Dad painting and learned a lot. When I was older he let me have a go. Eventually, with his help I repainted my bedroom. The sewing I'd learned from Mum enabled me to make curtains and nets. I gained a tremendous sense of achievement from doing this when I was in my late teens. I still wouldn't be confident about doing anything involving dismantling and rebuilding. Where Do You Get Your DIY Know-How? Good Questions |

I'd love to have your problem. I agree with the advice above. Don't make your bedroom another area for socializing, it's your haven! Why have you put the bed in the corner of all places? Move the bed forward and towards the center of the room, giving access to the fire escape. Put a dressing area with a closet against the head of the bed, thereby creating a headboard but still giving access to the fire-escape, if I understand you correctly. The area forward of your bed then becomes your lounging area. Put a low daybed at the foot of the bed so it makes the bed more of a rectangle instead of a square which is awkward in a rectangular space. Rugs will make each area welcoming. What I intensely dislike is when the coffee table is a great distance away from any furniture. The seat furniture is placed round the edges of the room close to the walls; the very expensive coffee table is too far away to be of any use and placed on a VERY expensive rug, not intended to be walked upon. Where does one put one's glass? On the floor where someone eventually kicks it over. I just don't get it. Real Life Guidelines: Proper Furniture Spacing Basics |
