On your way back out of Athens, do not forget to take a morning near the Central Market - cooking equipment can be found in the stores along Evripidou Street. Get off the metro at Monastiraki, and walk up Athinas street until you hit Evripidou.

While I can appreciate your point, I suspect that the resason that spending on clothing dropped from 17% in 1970 to 3% in 2012 has more to do with the increased cost of other needs, like energy, education, housing and healthcare. In addition, a number of high priced manufacturers have outsourced some production but keep enough "at home" to attach the "made in ____" label, including many large US manufacturers. Finally, I believe that most sustainable/renewable wood sources are outside North America, so some mindful purchases will likely come from overseas.

While I personally enjoy a few of the posts that show "higher priced" items (which are presumably selected by the editorial staff because of their quality), I look at them as trend pieces - most of them will not be collectible classics. To me, the more interesting story is that the true price of these higher quality "protein" pieces is not the retail price at which they could be purchased by readers, such as the $10k roche bobois sectional, but the trade price. I'd personally like to see the trade prices on these high end items. It is, after all, much easier for people in the design business to see and obtain true bargains on high quality goods - just as it has long been the case in fashion. It is somewhat offensive to direct a lecture to the common man who does not have the same shopping advantage.

If you are NYC, public employees cannot accept a gift with a value over $50, and classwide gifts must be a nominal amount for each family. We give a gift card to the local coffee shop and my kids decorate the envelope. we also contribute to the class gift which is usually amex gift cards.

Having used several designers/decorators and architects, in my experience, everyone needs to be brought back to the mission from time to time. Decorators in particular take every rejection personally, which I cannot understand. I have to live with it. If I'm ambivalent, then its not right. It has little to nothing to do with a vision, but rather, the execution of the concept. I am tired of people who don't have to live in my place making snide comments about my taste level when their suggestion is not wholeheartedly embraced. I live in a coop, that role is already filled by my neighbors.

Interior Designers: Reality Shows vs. Reality

There are so many issues raised by the post that its hard to limit one's comments. I have commented in a way that could be characterized as "negative", and what has prompted it, generally, has been inauthenticity - I am somewhat offended that a person believes they can "snow" me in some way, by an inaccurate history, or a product endorsement. I don't think I normally comment on matters of taste, although in earlier days, I may have. There are strange things going on in decorating blogs, and the commercial aspect makes bloggers and their publishers say strange things. Those items are certainly ripe for comment if comments are permitted. As to amateur homes, I do think that if you put it out there for comment, you should expect some negative comments. There is a desire by some to be witty and that may come off to other readers as "snarky" or sarcastic. But if you want an actual conversation, about ideas, even ideas as humdrum as decorating [jk], you cannot isolate the negative. In a way, the negative is what drives the improvement. It seems to me that blogs are like stores, and posting your home or design project online is like circulating a catalog - you did it to improve your outcome; you do not control the criticism it inspires; you should read the negative comments and look for things to take away from them that will improve your product or project or perspective. No one likes to hear negative attributes about themselves; it is unpleasant. But blogs are businesses, and many of the tours here are people seeking publicity for themselves or their businesses, and they should look for all feedback, even if its not pretty, because that is the full perspective. Do people innovate if they think its perfect?

There is also a strange double standard suggested in the comments to this post: when you express an opinion, it would not be strange for your conversation partner to ask you to support it. Dialogues have two sides. Should this construct not apply to decorating blogs? Is it not a dialogue after all? The business model seems to want a dialogue - especially when the comments draw traffic, and not just the post.

Finally, I think that especially with respect to home tours in particular, what is going on in the home may be perfectly wonderful, but its photographic depiction can make it appear less desirable. I have stopped looking at many house tours in recent years, because there are just too many pictures or too much duplication or a focus on minutiae or even, dare I say it, blurry images. So if you are posting your home, you have an added layer of concern in the photography and editing. I feel like in the early days, a tour was a real tour through a home; by comparison, now it feels like a collection of images of staged areas of a home. It may be, however, that online house tours have evolved, and I am just behind.

@landoffrost, 8 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms? I'm going to guess this is SOH and estimate even if it was still uninsulated, the ask is probably between $5 and $10 million.

This is clearly a beautiful house, but it does seem a little wierd - the post does start with a "poor me" approach; yet the owners of this house are clearly in the 1%, and this blog, which started about simple living, it helmed by someone with multiple summer houses, who grew up in an UES townhouse, attended a private school and takes luxurious vacations on private islands. I guess it takes growing up with a lot of space to appreciate the lifestyle of no clutter.

I think its pretty clear that while there are some survivor benefits payable, there are other needs that are not capable of being satisfied, the most significant of which has been identified as health insurance.
I think its inspirational that so many food bloggers have banded together to help this person (and other people, the charitable effort has not been limited to this cause). I think she has said that the benefits received for her kids would cover the mortgage and maintenance. It is likely much less than his income actually contributed to their family unit, so you should not presume that its a 1 to 1 wage replacement. In addition, one should not presume that social security will be available for her at all when she hits age 67.5, and you don't get two monthly payments.
