Anyone have any ideas on what I could replace the fennel with? I really, really, really hate fennel, black licorice, and anise--the smell/taste makes me nauseous.

If the fennel were just being used for a garnish, I wouldn't really worry about it, but I imagine that the soup will really taste like it's missing something (and be thinner) without that pound of fennel bulb.

I live in Boston, and there are news stories every winter about someone in Southie coming to blows with somebody over their parking spot that had been marked with traffic cones or folding chairs.

I live in a different neighborhood (Allston), where people aren't quite so territorial. I don't think I've ever seen the furniture save here, but a lot of parking is also two-hour in my immediate area.

As everyone's already said, painting would be good, if you can do it. Some artwork would be nice, too. Maybe some nice fabrics with geometric patterns framed on the wall?

I'd look at someplace like Pearl River<a/> or Good Orient to get a few Asian-themed accessories. A paper-shade lamp or lantern would be cute, and maybe a few knick knacks on the table and window sill (a lucky cat, some pretty stones in a ceramic dish, etc.).
