I went in recently to peruse honest-to-goodness garden tools and was surprised to find a poor selection and an indifferent staff. I, for one, will not miss it!

Oh I love these! I am usually not one to accumulate stuff but this I will make room for. Any tips on which store carries them in Chinatown?

We have an incarnation of this called the Zen Sofa, also from BoConcept, and we love it. We actually love the firmness of it for an everyday sofa and just this week had occasion to sleep on it ourselves as we turned over our bedroom to visiting guests. As for the tufted buttons being uncomfortable, I put an old quilt on the bed before stretching a full fitted sheet over and it is super comfy.

I too agree with the dark gray/blueish gray for the bottom cabinets and white/lighter shade of gray/that-mustard-yellow-that-complements-gray for the top. If your budget allows, why don't you consider replacing some of the solid wood cabinet doors on top with glass ones? That might serve to break up the monotony as well.

Very informative post! Thanks. I was about to order a roman shade from Pottery Barn but this post has dissuaded me.

I would like to add curtains and Ribba frames from Ikea and lamps from Crate and Barrel.

I've always loved a collage look -- be it fabric, curtains or whatever. So, YES, I love it. Totally agree with other AT posters who say it will also depend a great deal on what you pair it with. But it is a happy rug and who doesn't want that.

Very glad to read this post. Somehow the pressure is on to do something "water-cooler" worthy every time a long weekend comes rolling around. This time we hung out at home, organized things here and there, took long walks in our lovely neighborhood, cooked a lot and simply enjoyed our home.

After extensive price comparisons, I got mine at Home Depot (Container Store was the most expensive). I wanted the height to be shorter than the 54" so I bought a hack saw and sawed off the poles to the desired height. Now the four shelves they came with are now distributed along a shorter frame. I have a slab of marble on top of the first shelf and a lamp (to make it cozy!). I have stacked four Le Creuset pots (very heavy) and the shelf shows no sign of distress. I am very pleased.

This is an excellent post. And I totally agree with above posters who said that we need to start embracing the not-so-desirable elements we find in our homes and work around them. I am very inspired by the homeowners you have featured above.

I actually NEED my husband to be around to motivate me to get on with the organization tasks at hand. He doesn't help... just having him hang out somehow keeps me buzzing.

I tend to be a careful buyer and yet I look around our 1100 sq ft house and it is close to full of stuff. When I de-clutter I get depressed by the amount of wasteful buying. I am inspired by this post to keep vigilant of the things I spend hard-earned money on and to pare down constantly. Thanks!

Here are three items that have been difficult for me to find; pieces that combine form and function and that are scaled for an apartment or a small home:

Desk
Dining chairs
Bedside table

And of course, the guest room bed/sofa bed/futon/daybed.

I think there should be an option which says:

"Frequently -- always in search of that elusive best arrangement."

Because I do, but I don't like to live in a state of flux. Every time I move stuff around, I like to feel like I am done. If I truly felt like I was done, I'd probably leave things alone and just fuss with the dressing.

Caitlinella.

How about a rock garden?! Wrought iron chairs, tables topped with a slab of marble and just one or two large pots with a hardy plant (look to nature for ideas -- grasses thrive in windy coastal areas) may work.

If you want to use a table cloth for special occasions, I have seen instances where people weight them with rocks either on the table itself or sewn into the hem.

When I just moved into our little rented house and was faced with decorating a large-ish patio for a neighborhood party, I topped terracota pots with stone tiles to use as impromptu side tables. That might work well in a windy area too. You can easily deconstruct this set-up and make tidy stacks of the components when not in use.

Wow... you really got me going there! Hope this helps.
