I know I'm a few weeks late to the party, but I was actually pretty disappointed with the NY State offerings. There hasn't been a good venue for local wines since the NY Vintage stores shuttered, and I had hoped that the purchasing power of Whole Foods could get a bunch of wineries on board. But! No Shinn Vineyards, none of the great Finger Lakes Rieslings I've been reading about...And the prices aren't really different from what you'd find at wine stores in the neighborhood (full disclosure: I work at Pour Wines on 75th and Amsterdam, not too far away-- and we carry some of the wines mentioned by Mary).

I know I sound like a crank, but I was really hoping this would be a little more special, a la the Beer Room at the Bowery WF.

There's a bulk section upstairs at the Fairway on the Upper West Side-- it's not great, but you can get various grains, cereals, and yogurt-covered pretzels. I'd love to hear about anywhere else (can you buy spices in bulk at Kalyustans?), too.

I like-- alright, love-- the Volkornbrot (I think that's what it's called) from the Zingerman's catalog. Each loaf weighs about 2 pounds and is wheat-free. Buy a couple and freeze!

We always have hurricanes at the fish fry. They look so pretty, all red and orange and, um, hurricane-y.

I just read somewhere, as well, that Neem oil works. I'm not quite sure how to apply it, but: there you go. Someone may want to independently verify that.
I've been getting round after round of either spider mites or aphids (or a combination of both) on my windowsill hot pepper plant-- do you know whether, if I can get rid of these, the peppers will be good still? I think probably not, but...I'm not sure. Thanks!

Mmm: we've just started keeping them around all the time-- when we have people over and I've not planned a menu (alas, happens more often than I'd like to admit), we stuff them w/tuna and capers. Sounds a little gross, perhaps, but it's delicious.

Where can I find shiso?? I wander around NYC farmer's markets, searching to no avail-- I'm like the ghost of meals past...

I live in an apartment with low light and no outdoor space-- if I'd like to grow some food-type things (herbs, lettuces), do you think I can? How do you suggest I go about it? And thank you!

Perhaps this is reason enough to buy a rice cooker? Whenever I try to make slow-cooker oatmeal I end up with a burned and gloopy mess. Totally inedible. What on earth do you think I'm doing wrong?

This is a shade store question: we're trying to get cellular blinds for a wall-wide set of windows. We've figured out that we'll need three panels (two narrow, one wide) and we'd like the ones where you can lower them from the top. The price we see for the white set is, in total, about $600. How does this seem to you guys? We're willing to pay (some) for quality and ease and immediacy of installation (poor boyfriend's arm's constantly being roasted by the afternoon sun). Thanks, and please, please answer!

do you think that this would hold a reasonable amount of books? i'm trying to convince my design-snob live-in that ikea's a fine alternative to $27000 worth of beautiful shelves...

hello, all...i'm looking for a csa to join this late in the season-- i'm on the upper west side but work in midtown and would be happy to go further afield if there's a weekend pickup. i'm also trying to find someplace that would have a nice half-share (it's only the two of us) with plenty of basics (carrots, etc.). any ideas? i know it's late in the season to be thinking about all this...thanks for any help...

ah, i just moved out of an apartment with outdoor space to one without-- and i'm feeling very, very landlocked. now i'm in a 15-year-old box on the 5th floor, looking out over the busy street...is there anything all of you can think of that will help my transition? or make me feel a little less locked in the concrete jungle? thank you!!
